Chiefs dynasty is ENDED – Nate Burleson on Mahomes torn ACL as KC eliminated from Playoffs

to not have the Chiefs in the postseason first time since 2014. >> You know, I think you look at this game and I think with Kansas City kind of a microcosm today really of the season because the defense has shown up. The offense just not been able to to put enough points on the board, an offensive line that’s been decimated over time. Patrick Mahomes has been playing injured and obviously went off the field in this last game. But listen, let’s give a lot of credit to the LA Chargers. I mean, these guys have been very resilient and right now, you know, that’s a very, very physical football team. Yeah, the Chiefs officially eliminated from the playoffs. Um, but like you said, it’s it’s a reflection of how this season has been for the Kansas City Chiefs. But listen, we want to give our thoughts and our prayers to Patrick Mahomes. We don’t know the significance of the injury, but it didn’t look good and he also limped off the field um on his on his own. But but still though, you know, Patrick Mahomes, we hope you heal up, man. >> Yeah. And you know, we still got three weeks left in the season, but you’re already thinking about what changes are going to take place with the Kansas City Chiefs next year. I think that roster needs to look different. Hopefully Patrick is able to get healthy. It’s not too serious. He’ll be able to be back for the beginning of the season, but that roster has to look different. I think the culture is right there. They play hard. Andy has it right. They need more pieces up front on both sides of the football. >> Josh Allen’s got to be talked about in the MVP talk right now. He has literally put this team on his back. Did it again today. Down by 21 points, 21 nothing. They come back and win that game on the road in New England. >> Not a bad loss for New England though. I had that 10 game winning streak coming into it in a res a little reset for them heading into the playoffs. Absolutely. >> Yeah. Hit a reset. >> Football is indeed the consmate team sport as you guys >> in studio with the fellas and I go to our insider first here. JJ, we are reacting to this essentially in the moment. Patrick Mahomes suffers an apparent knee injury at the culmination of a season. And as we talked about a week ago, the dynasty, you could call it what you want, over or not, but the season we know is. >> The the season is over for the Kansas City Chiefs. officially eliminated from playoff contention. Here’s what we know right now with Patrick Mahomes. And we don’t know much because we’re still waiting to hear from Andy Reid. But an apparent left knee injury, Patrick Mahomes staying down on the field for some time. But perhaps even more concerning, while he was able to put on that brave face on the sideline and walk without assistance, when he went back into the tunnel, he was being helped by two athletic trainers while not putting too much weight on it. So certainly not going to speculate on the severity of the knee injury, but he could not come into back into a game that his team needed him in. Right. Gardner Menchu had to finish out that game. Now you look at the rest of the season, one has to question whether Patrick Mahomes whether he could or could not come back, whether it would even be worth it these final three games of the season in a loss season for Kansas City. So we’ll learn more about that injury here over this afternoon. Have plenty of texts out. Hoping to hear back, but obviously hoping the best for Patrick Mahomes. Mac, I find it not appropriate but fitting that this is where and when this injury occurs for Patrick Mahomes. He has been outside of the pocket for what feels like every productive rep of this season. There has not been a pocket. What we watched today was basically a a a mirror mirror image of what we watched last week against the Houston [music] Texans. >> They can’t protect him. Now, I understand a lot of injuries surface. uh you some unexpected things surface on the offensive line, but at some point in time, you got to find a way to get capable guys in that could just protect him a little bit. That’s the thing about Pat Mahomes. It’s not like he needs to have the Great Wall of China in front of him. Just give him the bare minimum and he can make something happen. There was a moment in this ball game late in the third quarter, he had zero yards passing. Zero yards passing. And it wasn’t like they weren’t throwing the football. They just weren’t getting things going in the passing game. And outside of that, he was running from for his life the entire ball game. So we we were giving the Kansas City Chiefs grace and considering them, they can still get in. That’s right. >> But if you look at the real the realness with with how they played, they’ve been a bad team for quite some time this season. But because of that >> that the the the legacy that they’ve created, >> the decade, >> the goodwill they were giving. >> Yes. We we were like and then we said if they get in we still believe they had a legit shot to win a championship but the reality is they haven’t been good. >> Emory we just saw the play once again and I know everything slowed down is easier to see. Do you see anything players taking care of players there? We don’t want to point fingers for the reason things happen but it looked rather innocuous and maybe avoidable. What did you see on the play? >> This is why I always say injuries are a freak occurrence. We’ve seen Mahomes get tackled like this and run like this forever, right? So he just stepped down wrong on the grass and >> had the ankles before. >> Exactly. And then just the his weight falling forward and all that force on the leg and the awkward step. That’s how you get that injury. This is unfortunate, man, because when you think about um Patrick Mahomes and what he means to his team, he he means everything. But I do feel like what we’ve seen from the Chiefs the last two seasons is a direct line to the loss of Eric Benemy. when BMI was there calling the plays and was running a tight ship. We didn’t see all the miscommunication of minor things that they were this was a a you know a game for Kansas City where they just looked off. Yeah. >> Nope. They wasn’t tying up loose ends. It wasn’t disciplined and that was this game and how it went down for Mahomes kind of embodied the entire season for them. So, I think when you lose a coach that had everyone playing with their head on straight and locking into the details, games like this in a season like this will happen. >> Season overseason personnel coaching, it always changes. A lot’s going to change for the Kansas City Chiefs because anytime we’ve seen Patrick Mahomes as the starter, the season doesn’t end until championship Sunday, if not later in a trophy in the trophy case more times than not. Not more times than not, but quite often, Mac, when they move forward and they redefine themselves as we start to project that team, the guy that just got injured is the thing you’re building around. What sort of questions do you have for the Chiefs moving forward as they try and reignite a year from now? >> Two things that I look when I look at the Chiefs when I see some of their problems, they lack talent. most sides of the football field, especially in the secondary defensively, which is shouldn’t be a surprise because they’ve lost so many key contributors over the last few years over with their success where other teams pluck some of their best players. So talent is is an issue and showing up the offensive line. When you look at some of the high level quarterback play from what we’ve seen, they have a nice sound sense of protection that what we saw this season was basically what we saw in that Super Bowl loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in that one game. >> That’s right. >> That one game. But we saw this multiple games. >> Now, there have been a lot of injuries, right? And and they were they were on the backup backup left tackle and Jaylen Moore went down in this game. They already down three offensive linemen uh who were inactive going into this game. So, there is that they did take a look at the offensive line and clearly it didn’t work. And then you have the injuries and then you have sending away Joe Tuni to the Chicago Bears where they decided we’re going to take Trey Smith over Joe Tuni. That was essentially the math that they did and probably not the right call. >> Eric Benemy also in Chicago with Joe Toney those two things together. Now lastly, what I would say is running back and running game. Four games this season, Patrick Mahomes led the team in rushing. They went 0 and4 in those games. Today against the Los Angeles Chargers. Chargers have a fantastic defense led by Jesse Mentor. But Isaiah Pacheco was the leading rusher. So not Patrick Mahomes. That’s the good news. Bad news, 21 rushing yards on the ground in a 1613 game. Yeah. Okay. So it wasn’t like they were throwing all over the yard. Nah, we just didn’t get the run game going. They didn’t get the run game going. And that has been a consistent theme no matter what the offensive line is. I will say this, not to let him off the hook, but you have a veteran backup quarterback in Gardenner Men. You know where you at on the field. Situational football. There was no need to make that throw. You had a timeout in your back pocket. >> Interception both. >> And your field goal range like you said go tied a game. You going to overtime. >> It did feel like Garner Mchu got us to the place we’ve known we’re going for the better part of a month now. That’s the Chiefs being mathematically eliminated for playoff contention for the first time in a decade. Patrick Mahomes also suffers three consecutive losses for the first time in his career. The injury is top of mind as we will bring you the latest here on CBS Sports HQ when we have it from the Chiefs. Longest playoff streaks, it was a decade and counting. Have to reset [music] and regroup in Kansas City.

  1. Here comes the media talking the entire time about how KC lost and nothing on how LA won…. “Chiefs lost cuz Mahomes is running for his life!!!”

Herbert: “wanna see my offensive line?…. Didn’t think so”

    Shocker…

  2. As of this week you should spend that much time talking about the goddamn Kansas City with all the damn excuses they provide for… Clear that injury in here walking off with the end of a damn dynasty 👀

  3. While being a Dallas cowboys die-hard fan all my life my prayers go out to Patrick Mahomes and his family that he gets well ASAP I know when Dak Prescott went down with his leg injury and fully recovered I pray the same thing for Patrick Mahomes 😇🙏…

  4. The best thing the Chiefs can do is bench their starters the rest of the season to rest their key players for next year and give the non starters playing time and thus more experience.

  5. Everything been going downhill since Mahomes said that they will get the 3 peat and not to get it twisted before they played Philadelphia in the Super bowl.
