More than 87 million people in the U.S. have watched NBA games this season across NBC/Peacock, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video and NBA TV, the most viewers in 15 years and up 89% vs. last year.

(Excludes 2011-12 season which began on Christmas Day.)

  1. Wow! Turns out people like positive coverage of their teams and actual basketball analysis. Who knew!!!

  2. Imagine that. Putting the games on networks that actually surround them with intelligent basketball discourse has improved ratings. So crazy.

  3. The most viewers in 15 yrs, yet why do the stars of the 2010s feel bigger. Guys like shai, Tatum, luka, Giannis feel lesser in terms of stardom

  4. Many people cord cut for years. The games were originally primarily on ESPN and TNT, cable networks. More people these days have streaming apps, with prime being one of the most popular, and NBC can be viewed over the air with a simple antenna.

    It’s not rocket science.

  5. Amazon prime has a huge subscription base just for its delivery services. Nba is great for retention because alot of people have prime anyway. Its been great for me at least to just flip it on since I already had it.

  6. I’d describe myself as the most casual fan possible. I don’t have a team(waiting on my Sonics to return) , I keep track of league wide news via this sub when it’s in my feed, and can hold a casual conversation about it but ive never been big into actually sitting down and watching games on a whim.

All that to say I’ve watched a staggering amount of games compared to previous years to be honest. It’s so accessible between all the apps I already have that it’s become the go to when we dont have something to watch and theres a game on which is often.

  7. I hope so when they replaced TNT with NBC/Peacock (only needed antenna to watch), and Prime

  8. The league is dying, nobody wants to watch the games, everyone hates offense and points, defense is dead and soon the NBA will be less popular than hockey. Did I get all that right?

  9. Because prime video is a great service that a lot of people have so the game is actually accessible

  10. Amazon’s Nightcap post game with Dirk, Steve, Blake, Udonis, & Taylor rooks was so far the best show postgame as an nba fan. As a fan its very educational, resourceful, and efficient since i have a yearly subscription on prime. been loving NBA cup recently

  11. I wonder how much of this increase is solely because people are checking on their sports bets and not because theyre watching just for fun.

  12. The coverage is so much better and I’m surprised by how refreshing it’s been as a viewer.

The world is so fucking full of manufactured “debate” and “conflict”, it was starting to become draining watching and following sports. The halftime show of ESPN started to sound like The Five.

As a fan it’s way nicer to watch people who also seem to be fans and bring expert analysis to what we’re seeing on screen. Special shoutout to Udonis, he’s been phenomenal.

  13. As everyone has been pointing out the last decade, the viewership was not down because of threes or lack of dunks or whatnot. It was down because the league made it so hard to actually watch the games. Just adding Prime has already doubled the viewership. If they made it even easier to watch the games by having just one subscription for all the games, or at least all of your team’s games, the viewership will go even higher.
