Contreras Gone: Did the Cardinals Get Enough in Return?
Is Chaim Bloom actually a double agent for the Boston Red Sox? Bernie Miklasz breaks down the conspiracy theories following the trades of Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras to Boston and explains why this massive roster overhaul is actually the smartest move for the St. Louis Cardinals’ future.
While national analysts like Ken Rosenthal mock the Cardinals for being a “piggy bank” for the Red Sox, the return of young pitching prospects offers years of control that the organization desperately needs. Bernie analyzes the new arms, including Hunter Dobbins and Dustin May, and explains the long-term strategy behind the pain. Plus, stay tuned for the “Bernie Guarantee” as he picks a winner for tonight’s Mizzou vs. Illinois Bragging Rights game.

Too bad the trade didn't include Oli
I like what Bloom is doing, but like you said, we need to find some power. I would have liked to have seen them sign Adolis Garcia for the outfield. They can't field a triple A team and expect fans to show up. Plus they need some veteran leadership, and not having any feared hitters just puts that much more pressure on these young pitchers.
Some fans are under the illusion the Cards have the "upper hand" when it comes trading Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras and Nolan Arenado.
Baseball aside. You don't sound well Bernie? Have a couple of warm Jamison's and get some rest. We can always fuss about Baseball after Christmas. ✌️😉
So now do we try and get outfielders with power for Donovan
For a 33/34 yr old 1st baseman with a NTC and excess salary, it was a solid move. Not sure what ppl were expecting to get back for Willy and Gray. Very similar moves and similar returns
This was a solid trade. Fujardo looks like a potential gem. Aita and Dobbins look like solid adds. Bloom does need to address the OF though.
Bloom has to take what he thinks is the best deal. No matter who that team is. He knows Boston’s prospects so less risk ??? If they have knowledge how to tweak them to make them the best they can be, possibly they know more than most of us regarding possible potential ??? Thanks to Cards ownership to spend millions to get better prospects back. Merry Christmas to all. !!! ✨🎄🎄🎄
salary dump plain and simple. the fact we got anything back is a bonus.
I don't know much about these pitchers, but it seems a little underwhelming return, but time will tell. I thought the Gray deal was fine, and I always thought that our best trading chip was Donovan. That trade will be the key to this off season rebuild. Arranado isn't going anywhere unless they buy him out, and that's not happening. The only places he's interested in going to don't need him. All in all, I think Bloom has done fine, a lot better than Mo would of done.
What you're not talking about Clarke and Dobbins and some of the others is their significant injury history, and you also fail to mention that most of these prospects are either low-graded or un-graded prospects, the only ones of note being the one with injury history. And we're talking serious ACL tears, TWICE, in Dobbins' case. Clarke has good upside and heat, but his mechanics are poor and there are many who see him only as a relief pitcher. These pick-ups were better than nothing, I guess, but it seems to me that we could have gotten better players if we'd waited a bit, especially in Contreras' case, we had no real reason to dump him now. Imagine what we cud have gotten for him later in the year, with teams looking for a true impact bat to go into the play-offs. Instead, we're getting…meh. We're not getting robbed, but we cud have done better IMO.
im shocked two kissasers like it
Really happy to see this move. Wilson is a good player but I’m ready for change. It’s just nice to see management finally doing something
I think anyone who says we didn’t get enough back is just completely naive when it comes to ball. This is a guy who’s 32/33 years old and is very injury prone, yes a solid piece for a team that’s close to the playoffs or is a playoff team but for the cardinals to keep him it made no sense. The must go’s this offseason needed to arenado, gray and Willy. Got 2 out of the 3 done and i think we’ll have to pay a large portion of arenados salary to whoever we trade him to and not get hardly anything in return but it’s just about getting him out the door at this point. He hinders this team and how they want to build this roster so he is a must go even if it means just total releasing him in the end
For everyone who is saying that we really didn't loose anything of value by trading Gray and Contreras. What we just sent away was our top Home run and RBI guy and our number one staring pitcher. Not saying we shouldn't have gotten rid of them just hoping we could have gotten more back. We just lost 14 wins from our rotation and 80 rbis from our offence. From a team that was already struggling
The nice thing about going so hard after good pitching talent is during a rebuild starting pitching can be the difference between finishing maybe third in the NL Central and finishing dead last with 71 wins. Cards aren’t going to slug their way out of very many jams in 2026…
Love it. Time to go
You forgot Tyler O'Neill and those worthless pitching prospects. In total, we now have over seven pitching prospects, from the same organization, in the past three years, and their pitching is nothing to brag about. I would have thought Durnan would of being a deal for Contreras, being a outfielder and all.
Bloom knows that the Red Sox have excess prospects and can take on salary.
How many teams can do this?
Zero would have been an adequate return. We got some pitching.
Picking Illinois over Mizzou isn’t really going out on a limb. It’s more like an automatic pick a five year old could make. Mizzou probably won’t be within 15 points by the end.
Dobbins beat the Yankees twice in 1 week last season to include 6 innings of 2 hit shutout ball on my birthday.😁Encouraged by the hot stove league so far. Go Cardinals.
I can't help but think that they may need to trade Arenado in a deal with another Cardinals player if they truly want to remove him from the payroll. I love Arenado, but his batting performance the last two years make him too expensive.
