Everytime i see how good Flagg defense is already, i get convinced even more that its a must for the Mavs to not only end up in the lottery next year but hit on the right player as well. The celtics built a championship team when they hit on 2 players in back to back years. OKC built most of its championship team through the draft as well.

The ideal scenario for this team is to tank this season and immediately find a way to become competitive again next season so they wont give charlotte a lottery pick in 2027. How they can achieve this i dont know. Its why those coming weeks might be one of the most important in franchise history.

  1. Oof, a defensive rating of 157.7 is absolutely despicable work.

I don’t think we really have to “tank.” The loses will take care of themselves just based off roster construction. We are too good to “catch” the true cellar dwellers, but I don’t believe we have to. This draft is deep enough I think a top 12 pick is “all” you need. Don’t take any stupid minimal return deals for any of our older pieces. Obvs if you get a good deal then go for it, but I think this team can play the season out and still have enough pieces to make sure we get a high enough pick even if we wait until the offseason.

That said I need to look into our salary cap situation more. I know it’s bad, but there could be some specifics in there that would change my opinion on what they should do and when.

  2. I really hope they’re able to land a second pick in this draft in any trades involving AD/Gafford.

  3. I really don’t think we “have” to compete next season. Our pick is gone no matter what. Teams that rebuilt through the draft did it with more than just their own picks. OKC has 4 picks in this years draft, none of which are their own. We should absolutely trade win now players if they get us good players in the future and you never know how fast a team can fall apart. Just look at us

  4. I don’t care how it’s done, so long as we avoid getting stifled like we did early on with Luka by rushing to build a contender because he was so good out of the gate. The current cap system is unforgiving, so you need a stable vision and lots of patience. I hope that Dumont (ie. the Adelsons) supports this approach instead of trying to put asses in seats with flashy moves just to sell the idea of a new stadium.

Prioritize getting picks. Commit to drafting best player available rather than best fit. Focus on internal talent development. Aim for 1 more top-tier talent to complement Cooper (or vice versa if that ever happens), and focus on creating a roster and system that fully aligns with those two. (That seems so obvious, and so easy to write, but I know how damn difficult it is.)
