IMO, if we decide to keep Carter long term, I’m sure Howie will look to take advantage of just extending Carter this offseason rather than chancing him having a standout season in the final year of his rookie contract.

With a potentially $26.7 mill, 5th year option if they elect to pick it up, I don’t think we’re really saving THAT much money in two years if Carter ends up with a $30+ mill/year AAV.

I’m sure the front office will want to get a better evaluation of Carter’s shoulder health for long term to assess it’s not a problem beyond this year before making that investment though.

  1. I think we pay him and reset the market

Preferably before Vita Vea resigns with the Buccs

  2. That fifth year option would be all guaranteed. All cash all against the cap all in one year. I doubt we move forward like that.

  3. They’ll probably exercise it while they work on an extension. Then the extension will either erase the option year or kick in after it

  4. Honestly I think it’s tougher than it was prior the season. He’s been much less productive this year. At the very least he may of saved the team a little bit of money.

  5. Howie doesnt do 5th year options, he resets the market with a high dollar deal then watches everyone else pay more for those same positions

  6. However it ends up shaking out I’m just hoping we can keep both Carter and Davis, as well as Coop and Mitchell eventually. It’s A LOT of mouths to feed but in Howie I trust.

  7. I believe he’ll be extended as he’s coming off a weaker year and we can likely get him at a lower price this offseason. & I think he’s viewed as a defensive cornerstone and Howie won’t let him walk

  8. I thought they’d sign him long term asap before this season, but now I think you wait a year and pick up the option given his temperament and health issues. It’s too risky now to make him one of the highest paid non-QBs in the league.

You can make an argument now that extending Davis and Ojomo is a better use of resources.

  9. That’s not how the option works

We will almost certainly pick up the 5th year and also sign him to an extension, and the extension doesn’t kick in until after the rookie contract (including 5th year). It allows the extension to last longer into the future and the value of that 5th year is less than the new APY of the extension

  10. Lock up Jalen Carter long term and the eagles defense continues to be elite. We won a Super Bowl off of that defense and off of spectacular individual plays from carter.

  11. Pay him.

We know we’re going to pay him eventually, so get him the cheapest we can, which is now

  12. I believe they will pick up the option unless they can get a lower number based on his play and availability issues this year

  13. Ideally. You announce that you pick it up the same day that you announce his extension. This way his fifth year still relatively cheap.

  14. Yeah. Generational wealth outta get him in shape and focused on football. I don’t have high hopes for this kid. Aaron Donald skill without the drive and devotion to football.

  15. Do you think there are people in the Eagles front office who aren’t Jalen Carter fans because I do. I think if they had made the trade for Micah Parsons they would have had to let Carter go.

  16. Reset the market, let everyone call it an overpay for a year until the other top DT’s resign after and then in 3-4 years it looks like a steal and every can exclaim “How does Howie get away with it?” again haha

  17. IF we sign him to a $30-$35 mill per contract alot of the offense will need to renegotiate their deals. The cap space is an issue especially with 30 or so roster spots that need to be filled every year either through resigning/draft/or free agency.

  18. Pay him early, get the early-bird pricing special.

Going to have to make some sacrifices on the offensive side of the ball, but such is life. We’re paying too much for too little especially given the play of the O-line. Every one of them have regressed this year. I’m not saying it’s an easy position, but last year took its toll.

May have to say some goodbyes and take some chances on guys like the Bechtons of the world because you can’t have the highest paid offense and defense simultaneously, and over the next few years, we’ve got some defensive players who need to get paid.

  19. Dont want to do this but just for thought:

What could we get for him in a trade? Jets got a 1 and a 2 for Quinnen Williams and I think JC would fetch more.

  20. If the Eagles win the Super Bowl this year, there’s no way Howie Pays him.

If when we drafted him we were told that we’d go to 2 Super Bowls and win 2, then he’d sign somewhere else as the biggest DL contract ever, we’d take that in a heart beat.

You can only keep Davis or Carter, you can’t have both unless they sacrifice a TON of money and even still, the kick the can money is going to come a lot faster.

  21. Gotta pick him up before that value increases like it is nothing. Same with Dallas and Coop and Q. CB market is rising on the price.

  22. Howie should spend his DT budget on Jordan Davis in my opinion. Has been more consistently disruptive this year than Carter was last year and he’s a safer bet off the field.
