[Passan] Closer Pete Fairbanks and the Miami Marlins are in agreement on a one-year, $13 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Fairbanks, 32, had an $11 million option turned down by Tampa Bay and went onto the open market and beat it by $2 million.

  1. Love that the only reliever the Dbacks have spoken to this offseason decided to sign elsewhere! Fantastic work!

  2. Marlins GM Bendix is one of my favorites to follow. Making great moves with limited money.

  3. Every year now it seems like a lot of the better relievers sign with bad-to-mid teams for the deadline trade value

You’d think an upper end team would have beat $13 million to save on prospect capital but it never seems to work out that way

  4. Good move for Pete. Go to the team that’ll pay the most and probably get traded to a contender at the trade deadline.

  5. It seems that all the low payroll teams might be making moves this year in order to raise payroll and get ahead of any arguments in favor of a payroll floor during upcoming CBA talks?

Regardless, it’s interesting seeing the White Sox, A’s, Pirates, and Marlins making interesting moves during the offseason.

  6. I think this happened with Kyle Schwarber too. Non-tendered but signed for more than he was estimated to get in arbitration

  7. I really don’t know why the Rays declined his option. Even before seeing that he got more on the open market, he still had a lot of trade value even if you thought he was paid a bit more than he was worth. This just feels like an unforced error that is even more obvious in hindsight.

  8. The good ole’ “My family wants to know who’s paying for the Christmas turkey” signing.

  9. The Pirates, White Sox, and Marlins are the most active teams on the market right now 😭

  10. Going to a team run by the former Rays guy

Also it’s a warm weather area and indoors. I’ve always wondered if people would get scared off because of Fairbanks’ Reynaud’s Syndrome, along with the volatility of being a reliever and a former Ray at that.
