Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson lays out the next steps of his rebuilding plan
December 26, 2025
KDs plan is no moves for the next 2 years, but we knew that. Sucks either way. Hope the prospects pan out!

“We will build through the draft”
KD has repeated himself every year since he took the job
10 year rebuilding plan
Imagine telling your boss that your plan for your business “The plan is we are going to be terrible for the next 5 years minimum, with no guarantee this plan actually works, and hopefully the prospects I pick will turn out to be NHL players, hopefully good one cause there’s so many first rounders” Kyle has the best job in the world. Come into his office and watch his young plants grow. It’s like he’s getting paid six figures to play fantasy hockey.
Honestly I blame ownership, must be nice having an NHL franchise handed to you, and you not really giving a shit how it does. Money comes in regardless, gambling sponsors handing out 50mil to put bumper stickers on everything. Telling fans just wait, it might work out.
Build through the draft.
Draft the wrong guys.
Rebuild goes nowhere.
The KD masterplan.
Yay, the 10 year rebuild plan! Does this mean the Hawks will cut prices? How are we even going to get to the salary floor at this rate…
This team will be nasty when Frondell and Kantserov arrive. At least we arent like Buffalo or Vancouver forever in the middle. Playoffs are coming boys stay the course. This team was never really a playoff contender this year when you look at our division.
The Hawks are on track to have a powerhouse for a decade if they don’t trade the youth for veterans.
Building through the draft is like gambling. You’re just playing the odds. Obviously you can try to maximize your chances of success through smart scouting and drafting, but you could do everything right and still end up losing because so much of it just comes down to luck.
Talk about the best job ever. No expectations and can continue to just be awful.
Every rebuilding team needs to make moves for youngish established players the raise the ceiling. There has to be moves. Davidson thinking he’s going to build this completely through the draft is ridiculous.
I’m a Habs fan as well, and the Dobson trade this the exact type of move the hawks are going to need to make as well.
Imagine how things would look if he didn’t get lucky and win the lottery for Bedard
I love all of you, but I think the recent bad stretch is clouding a lot of opinions
I just really wish he would have taken Demidov. There were a ton of us screaming for Bedard’s new wing.
The other problem is lack of good vets thru free agency. Thanks to the skyrocketing cap, teams can afford to keep their young players and extend them. As of now, the best free agent is set to be Alex Tuch or someone of that skill set. Tuch is good, but he’s not someone that moves the needle.
Davidson has said time and time again he wants to build through the draft. We’re just now starting to see some of the talent come through the system and in the NHL. It’s a season of growing pains. The hawks need to see what they have before they can address other concerns, and I think Davidson is doing a good job of that.
I get it. Losing sucks. But trying to rush a rebuild or retool is how they get stuck in mediocrity, like the Red Wings or Sabres.
I mean yeah what else are we supposed to do at this point
Will be curious if we use all the draft picks this year. Last year he talked quite a bit about how we were running out of room for prospects which is why we traded up for players.
To be fair… rebuilds do take time. The last team to build and win through the draft basically was Colorado.
But how long did it take the avalanche to be this good and win the cup in 22’? They drafted landeskog in 11’, mack in 2013, Rantanen in 15’ and Makar in 17’. I don’t know if The hawks can afford to go that long without winning a cup or being a dominant powerhouse. But at this point what choice do we have? This franchise will live and die with KDs plan. If we fail it’s really ownership that’s to blame as they have the final say. 50/50 at this point.
If we don’t sign vets, this team won’t be any good until Bedard, Nazar, Vlasic, and Levshunov *are* the vets. We’ll be lucky if we’re the second coming of the present day Oilers.
This is the correct way to do it with the cap increase. Good teams can afford to keep their players now. It’s not a safe bet to bank on FAs, especially as the mid/bottom tier team we have been since KD. Imagine if he gave away some of our draft capital to sign one or two more teuvo level players. That would set us up to be forever mediocre like the Flyers. Definitely need to focus on drafting the best players until we can get those big names to want to play here. I think with the step Bedard has taken, it’s clear to see this team is close to contention and has a bright future BECAUSE of how KD has played it so far. I trust he’ll make the right signing/trade soon.
Bedard staying healthy
Patience! Theres no need to acquire a Brian Campbell. Just let Cam Barker develop! And what do we need a Sharp or a Havlat for, they’d just take away development ice time for Jack Skille!
You guys want to avoid going into Sabres mediocrity? KD is heading RIGHT for it. If you will only ever draft, why would you be any better than all the other teams who are also drafting, but who are also improving their team other ways if they are trying to move up? If you have seen hit rates for draft picks you will quickly find out that having a fee more than everyone else doesnt lead to a meaningful separation with other teams.
The nuclear holocaust rebuild continues, and will for several years to come. And then, we will finally achieve… average. Congrats KD!
Ok fine, but don’t sleep on key FA signings. Remember Hoss? He was huge for us during the Cup runs. Maybe was the tipping point when he signed in 2009.
Without Bedzar this team isn’t worth watching. I get the plan and we’re no where near win now. But thinking these guys will be kicking ass in 2 seasons is a stretch. Some nice pieces to trade and several to keep, I have believed his plan, but this interview didn’t convince me he’s playing 3D chess. I hope I’m wrong. I don’t see a strike at the post season for 2-4 years regardlessly. A24-25 year old Bedard lifting the cup will have a ton of new faces around him. They’re going to need some rentals end last shot guys then.
It’s simple, we clone bedard
Easy way to keep his job. Keep promising the future with not a single prospect developed under his watch
