    First, the official nickname of Japan’s national baseball team is “Samurai Japan.” This term is widely recognized in Japan, and even during live game broadcasts, announcers sometimes deliberately use the word “samurai” instead of “players.” This isn’t a recent development—it dates back to the 2006 WBC. Incidentally, Japan’s national soccer team is also nicknamed “Samurai Blue.”

    The second point relates to how Shohei is described. In Japan, he is not referred to as a “two-way player,” but rather as “二刀流” which literally means “two-sword style.” The term originally described samurai like Miyamoto Musashi, who fought using two swords at the same time. Because Shohei excels at both pitching and hitting, someone began using this expression to describe him, and it has since become widely established.

    That’s why it feels completely natural for Shohei to be portrayed as a samurai in a WBC-related advertisement. (The ad itself promotes a campaign in which passengers who fly with JAL have a chance to win tickets to the WBC.)
