Fascinating breakdown I just saw of where the money came from for the four major sports in 2023.

No surprise the NFL was printing money from the National TV/Media deals and it keeps going up.

The NFL made more revenue from their TV deals than the other three leagues made in total.

Ticket Sales and Local TV meant a whole lot more to the other three sports than it did for football.

  1. I wonder how much of the 44% is the Leafs and what will happen as the effects of pricing out your fan base for a generation starts to really settle in

  2. I’ve always said that NHL isn’t great to watch on TV for the general pop, but man does it translate well live. There isn’t a better live sport in the world. The NFL is the opposite. Pretty decent TV watch with replays and slow motion, but doesn’t translate well live imo. The vibe of an NFL game is fun, but the actual sport is pretty boring live.

  3. I’m surprised how close the NHL is to NBA, I thought the gap would be much larger and closer to the NFL.

  4. Considering most NFL games are on ctv or tsn in Canada as well as CBS, Fox and NBC. It’s super easy to watch.

Hockey is all over the place and I even have cable and Amazon.

  5. Id like to see a send graph of:

1 percentage of time of actual game play.

    2. Pct of time in commercials.

3.. pct of time showing game play setup and filler( play clocks, face off setup, announcers, and replays)

  6. Tells me the national media and the majority of people aren’t interested in hockey. Also hockey may be overcharging us for our beers and dogs. Hard problem to fix. Football is perfect, baseball has nostalgia and basketball gets the most attention. NHL can’t compete in any category except nostalgia.

  7. I love that most of the revenue comes from ticket sales, it really is a fantastic experience to go to a game, and what engages most of us the first time

  8. Does it matter? Like would higher revenue translate to a better experience for fans or just make owners and players more money?

  9. It’s wild to me that NFL is so popular. I tuned in to watch a game last weekend because it had been a while since I sat down and watched a regular season game. I don’t know how people do it. It’s so slow, the amount of stoppages and TV breaks and penalties, it’s painful to watch. I did a quick google search and found that each game is over 3hrs, the game clock is 1hr, and active play time is around 11min.

  10. Is NFL Local Media just radio? Or does it also count when you put on the national station and get your local team

  11. It’s funny how much hockey fans (myself included) say sometimes how we aren’t “mainstream” like the other leagues.

$6.8 Billion in annual revenue is an objectively insane amount of money lol

  12. I live in San Diego and I’m a Kings fan. In past seasons I paid to watch the games on Fox Sports West. Sinclair bought Fox Sports from Disney and changed the name to Bally. I paid to watch games on Bally, then they went bankrupt.

Bally rebranded as FanDuel Sports Network. I pay $19.95 a month to stream it on my tv using their app. No blackouts unless the game is nationally televised.

FanDuel is now going to declare bankruptcy and will stop televising Kings games after the 25-26 season ends.

My question to the NHL is, if you are only getting 11 percent of revenue from these different local market broadcasts, and these local networks keep going out of business, why don’t you televise all of the games for every team in the league using your own network? I’m willing to pay a reasonable amount of money to watch my favorite team and I’m sure there are plenty of fans who would do the same.

  13. It will never happen but I am of the firm belief that the popularity of the NBA, MLB and NHL would drastically increase if each team played less than 20 games.

NBA and NHL might struggle a bit more because of overlap with football and one another. But imagine if each round of the Stanely Cup playoffs was a single game. Plenty of fans would hate it but there’s no doubt the excitement for each of those games would be maximized, even more so than a Game 7 cause all the casuals don’t want to pay attention to all 7.

NFL games would never be so popular if they played 80 of them.

  14. I’ve seen this graphic before and I’m always so proud and happy that nearly half of the NHL revenue comes from ticket sales. I’m hoping the sport continues to grow and the PWHL, AHL, and other leagues/colleges can get a nice slice of that revenue to also grow.

  15. Imagine how much more money the MLB would make if they didn’t schedule 25% of their games on weekday afternoons…

  16. At $200 million, an NHL team generates about the same revenue per year as a couple good Walmarts. 🤔

  17. If the could get that ticket revenue % down they’d be worth a lot more and be up there with NBA

  18. I can’t even watch my home team on TV without buying something now.I used to watch every single game.
