SNY | Tom Hanslin: The Yankees signed Mexican League MVP Nick Torres to a minor-league deal Saturday, as announced by Algodoneros Unión Laguna, his former team. The 32-year-old slashed .347/.425/.730 this past season with 27 homers and 79 RBI in 86 games, adding to an impressive resume south of the border. A fourth-round draft pick of the Padres in 2014, the outfielder and first baseman played in 283 games between Double-A and Triple-A between 2014 and 2018 but never earned a call to the bigs.

Daily News | James O’Connell: A handicapping of the Yankees’ top long-term options at one of the game’s most important positions: shortstop. George Lombard Jr., the team’s top prospect per many publications, has the upside as a former first-rounder and has shown his ability (to varying degrees) on both sides of the ball in the minors, making him the favorite. Despite his recent struggles, Anthony Volpe, the incumbent, remains in play. And several outside options — the Reds’ Elly De La Cruz, the Nationals’ CJ Abrams, and the Angels’ Zach Neto — could be in play down the road should the Yankees look to augment outside the organization.

Barry Johnson, a longtime Miami Herald writer who covers the Marlins, gave key updates on two of their starting pitchers to whom the Yankees have been linked. Miami is purportedly playing hardball on both Edward Cabrera and Sandy Alcantara, particularly the latter, who appears unlikely to be moved. In more encouraging news, the Astros and Orioles are reportedly out on Cabrera, leaving the Yankees as one of his few remaining suitors.
