Regardless, Marchment is a bit of scumbag so I would not put it passed him to knee someone.

Actually was not a knee on knee hit. Was at the game and a different replay angle they showed revealed that it was Marchments stick hooking Schaefer not a knee on knee. Definitely looked bad at first so the response was warranted for what seemed to happen but the play was not actually dirty aside from the slash.
If the refs and league won’t protect the players better believe some teammates will.
Clutterbuck said he saw three instances that Marchment was targeting Schaefer.

Where is the replay with the hit to the knee? I don’t my like Marchment as a player, but this was not a hit to the knee.
So having seen another angle of this with a clearer resolution, the title is a bit misleading : the contact was more of skate to skate. knee didn’t appear to get any contact. though he was definitely leading with the knee, so if you wanted to call him on intent, i don’t take issue with that. Unfortunately i think Barzal is going to get the worse end of this if it goes to a hearing, specifically because it was retaliatory.
