Axel Sandin-Pellikka is producing but becoming more sheltered | McLellan’s 1-year anniversary
Axel Sandin-Pellikahas 9 points in his last 13 games, his production has spiked tremendously. But in an effort to spark that offense, they have really began to shelter his usage. Is that the best for him and the team? Todd McLellan’s has been the coach of the Detroit Red Wings for a little over a year, and so far the returns have been strong. #LGRW

Let's go boys huge W last night 💪🏻
On one of your off days, how about doing a comparison with 2021 first-round draft goalies Sebastian Cossa (Detroit) and Jesper Wallstedt (Minnesota).
Wallstedt is an NHL rookie of the year candidate this year (11-2, 2.16, .931) with the Wild , while Cossa is 15-1, 1.57, .940 with the Griffins.
It could be an interesting rivalry in the NHL if Yzerman ever lets Cossa play in the NHL. Too bad Minnesota has more trust in its young goalies than Detroit.
I have zero problem with ASP's play or deployment. He's a rookie, he's going to make rookie mistakes and get bodied in the D zone. This is just part of his development. I think he's a Wing all season, even if he gets dropped to the 3rd pair with a trade addition.
what Detroit should have done is taken advantage of Ken Holland and traded for Jordan Spence before this season began and let ASP get used to the physical play and smaller north american ice with a year in grand rapids developing. When ASP was ACTUALLY ready for the NHL if Detroit didnt want 2 similar players on the right side of the blue line they could have traded Spence for a nice return. The wings would be on the positive side of goal differential this season and be well ahead in 1st in the standings with just 1 good blue line decision. that along with McClellans ignorance in persisting with Hamonic in the lineup cost this team several games this season.
The 2 defensemen I could see Yzerman targeting are Boston Bruins Mason Lohrei a top 4 LD or Anaheim Ducks Pavel Mintyukov a potential top 4 LD who isn't getting an opportunity in the top 4. Mason Lohrei is the defenseman I see completing Detroit's top 4 D for the foreseeable future, he is very reliable defensively and has great size at 6'5. I could see a similar trade similar to the K'andre Miller trade to Carolina, probably a little less. Detroit trades Detroit's 2027 1st round draft pick top 10 protected, Detroit's 2028 4th round draft pick and Erik Gustavsson to Boston for Mason Lohrei.
Detroit Red Wings defense pairings:
Edvidsson Seider
Lohrei ASP
Chariot Johansson
JBD
I’m fine with how asp is playing at this stage of his development. I’ve seen him get bullied and pushed around. Mainly due to strength height and weight. 10 or 15 pounds of muscle would probably go a long way in fixing that problem. Obviously that’s something that really can’t be done in season. I will say this. I’ve seen him get absolutely crunched. And still come back and play in the same game. That’s important.
Definitely not being sent down. You improve by playing with better players. I would consider putting him on the third pair but our third pair is not good either, so….
Send him down? What?
30 minutes repeating the same 3 points
– ASP being asked to do to much
– Why? Because of poor team General Management
– They need to get 1 or more D
I would have rathered 30 minutes of wild BS trade speculation than this.
