[Siegel] Craig Berube said that Chris Tanev will miss “significant time” with a groin injury. Said Berube: “They’re looking at things going forward here, so I’m not gonna speculate on what they’re gonna exactly do. But he’s gonna be out a while.”

  1. Paraphrasing my comment on the other thread.

    We’re fucked.

The Leafs dont really have any options to go get another quality defender, they still need a top 6 winger and can’t afford that either

  2. I understand there will be a temptation to do so but I cannot stress enough how important it is that we do not trade significant future assets to add players at this trade deadline.

Having said that, we don’t really have any significant future assets to trade anyway so I’m not that worried about it.

  3. Love the guy but he really needs to sit the season him doing this lupul thing is very painful to watch

  4. The only somewhat positive here is that there’s no games in February, so if this is a 4-6 week injury then he’s gonna have like a full month to recover from it (hopefully) and same goes for Joshua.

  5. I was at the game last night. For what the salary is, Benoit is doing okay. Is he Tanev level? No of course not, but he’s worth his pay.

  6. Year two of a six year contract, hell yeah.

(This isn’t a knock on Tanev. Just disappointment that we’re already dealing with these injuries so early in the contract term.)

  7. To be completely fair and honest, we need to be prepared that he’s effectively done. One more random hit and a concussion and he should hang them up. That would be three in a year and to be honest I thought after the last one he was done.

  8. That quote terrifies me. We don’t have the assets to move, and what we do have we need, as those could be future core players on affordable deals. We need to ride this out, test our organizational depth, and consider dealing off some pieces to acquire the best available draft capital possible. Since we lack much in terms of assets, one thing we could have with a few sell offs is cap space. If we can go into next offseason with a realistically maximized cap space, we could be in a way better position to acquire players and retool.

I don’t think we need to give up on this year. I just think we need to ignite the hunger and opportunity for other players in our organization to take the reins or push for spots. The team is stagnant and with so many veterans it’s easier to accept indifference. Last night was a great example.
