Anyone saying “we pay good money we have the right to boo” isn’t necessarily wrong but is outing themselves as someone who doesn’t see this team as people. Imo the booing is one thing but it was taken too far when the cheers came after a hit on Luke. That was a disgusting, line-crossing, shameful moment from the fans in attendance.
They weren’t saying “boo” they were saying “luuuuuu-uke!”
Some really big boneheads on this sub. No one disagrees Luke made some big mistakes last night but booing him all game and cheering for when he got hit is actually embarrassing. Gtfo of the rock and cheer for Carolina at that point. It’s pretty embarrassing too that everyone on r/hockey agrees that our behavior last night is pretty idiotic
Can we get some sort of booing Luke Hughes megathread going? Seeing the same dumb opinion piece posted over and over again is annoying.
He learned better than to carry the puck in front of his own net, when under pressure, before he was 10 years old. That “boo” was totally deserved. If he can’t handle fans he can go get a real job. He gets to play games for a living.
And for those arguing whether or not they’re “considered people”, sports are entertainment. If you go see a concert or a comedian or a play and they don’t perform up to your standards would you blame anyone for booing?
The fact is not only do we as fans expect more from him, the devils put 9 million dollars of confidence in him and he hasn’t earned any of it since he signed the contract. Keefe should be in the hot seat for not immediately benching him for an egregious error.
Cheering him getting hit is pretty scummy though. Can’t defend that one.
What is the ven diagram between those who think the booing was fine because ‘he is an adult and has a huge salary’ and those who think that Fitz’s move towards neanderthal hockey was the right move?
Needlessly rain down? All due respect, the booing was one hundred percent needed.
I do think booing HIM the whole game was a bit much. It IS a game of mistakes and he didn’t deserve to hear it the whole rest of the night. But the whole team needed to hear that shit, not just him.
This was not just a reaction to two bad Luke plays. Luke was the unfortunate recipient of the boos. Luke also famously signed for a shit ton of money this offseason after a lot of drama regarding what it would eventually take, and these are the results we’re getting. This is not a rebuilding team anymore. They had multiple top five picks in this lineup, including two 1OAs. Fan patience is running thin and understandably so.
And it’s definitely not all on him. The fucking team didn’t score on four consecutive power plays. Jake Allen did a head scratchingly DUMB play to lead to that goal, but the team had ample opportunity to equalize and let it go to waste. Luke fucked up. Sure. But the team couldn’t make up for it.
Don’t worry about ruffling his feathers. Luke will be alright. With all that money he just signed for he can pay for a shit ton of therapy, social media filters, AI bots to gas him up and yes men to tell him he’s great all day. He’ll be fine.
But you can’t buy the fans. You can’t PR your way out of what we’ve been seeing. The results speak for themselves.
I’m happy to celebrate how wonderful these players are individually and I can’t wait to see his brother win us gold, but if we don’t see it translate to results that benefit the New Jersey Devils then Devils fans will react accordingly.
We will recover from the Great Boo’ing Incident of 2026.

Deserved

He deserved the boos.
Cheering when he takes a hit is wack though.
