I wrote for DRaysBay again. I also included an application of a metric I created called “command deltas” – a simple yet powerful way to quantify command.

  1. Well, someone will, lol. Shane Baz took a step back this past season from above average (with a small sample size) and young to simply average and young. Joe Boyle is currently average and young too based on more MLB starts last season. Ian Seymour is another option, among others, to replace Baz. We just don’t know how any of these guys will progress. But even though I’m disappointed they traded Baz, I see why they did it. And I would find it hard to argue today that Boyle is a step down. Maybe two years from now we say different but we can’t see the future.

  2. Is it reasonable to assume that he can learn to throw strikes? Let’s be generous and say that he didn’t start playing baseball until he was 12. He’s 26 now. Presumably he’s been working on throwing strikes for the last 14 years but still walks a lot of guys. This is the year it’s going to click for him?

  3. I wouldn’t mind giving Boyle a look out of the bullpen, possibly as a starter turned closer scenario. He was typically lights out in his first inning or two of work, but then started to struggle the second time through. He’s got elite stuff, but is currently missing the command needed.
