The last safety taken in the top 10 of the NFL Draft was Jamal Adams (6th overall) in 2017

The last time a safety was taken in the NFL's Top 5 picks was in 2010 with Eric Berry (5th overall), and before that, Sean Taylor in 2004 (5th overall).

Safeties are rarely picked in the Top 5, with Taylor and Berry being the highest-drafted safeties ever.

I would love Caleb Downs on Giants as I believe he'd have the ability to high transform and improve this secondary. However do you think he is a talent that should be taken this high? Given that only Eric Berry and Sean Taylor were picked that high? Should we do away with positional value, at lest with safeties? Or should we trade down to still get him?

“Go Jamal Adams, go Jamal Adams!”

    Funny ass call still

  2. We have a young QB. It’s time to build around him.

How does grabbing a safety over a high prospect pass rush, OL, WR or even a TE improve Dart’s development?

Another note, Schoen is drafting and it would pure clown world if he drafted Caleb Downs with 5th overall. Guy let Xavier McKinney walk just to over pay Holland and just to draft a Downs?

  3. I’m high as hell on Downs. I want us to take him at 5 and trade back in to the late first round for CJ Allen out of Georgia.

  4. Silly me thinking they’d have the 1 or 2 draft pick and trade down to accumulate picks to address multiple needs. Now we’re considering a Safety at 5? Wow.

  5. It’s gonna be Carnell Tate at #5. Book it.

Him opposite Malik + Wandale means our offense is finally “complete”.

  6. I’m just not seeing it. If Kyle Hamilton or McKinney were on this defense how much better would they do really? Our run defense would still be dog

Personally I like the philosophy of using top 10 picks on positions that play closest to the line of scrimmage or are involved on pretty much every play. I don’t think the Safety position provides enough value to be picked top 5 unless we know that player is going to be Ed Reed or something

  7. All drafts aren’t created equal, this year is light on top end talent so guys like downs and Reese are going higher then they would in years with stronger qb/edge/tackle/wr classes

  8. I think a guy as good and highly regarded as Downs you take him at 5. I’ve heard him compared as a captain of the defense to Earl Thomas from the Seahawks Legion of Boom. Guys like that can completely change a defense, and definitely help with tackling against the run.

Kyle Hamilton was drafted 14th overall – if someone took him at 5 they would clearly be very happy with that choice in hindsight. Hell I wish we took him instead of Evan Neal at 7 if we could go back in time.

  9. Caleb downs is the best safety prospect since Sean T and is the best player in this draft. He deserves to go top 5.

  10. The Raiders and Jets are almost certain to draft quarterbacks. However, there will still be two teams picking between them and us. Who we draft will really depend on who they pick, as well as what happens in free agency. If we Keep Eleumenor and Flott, but lose Wan’Dale, I think that increases the likelihood the Giants draft a WR here. Free agency will play a big role in what they do with this pick.

  11. Knowing JS, he’s gonna go by positional value. I’d go positional value. Take a safety in the top 5, you’re going to pay him like a top safety. The premium positions like receiver, QB, pass rusher, & LTs, you get premium talent on a discount. To me I’m using that as a piece to build around Dart whether that’s another wr or a RT.

  12. I’m real torn because I think the giants are building a good defense. I like downs a lot but safety/corner is basically a luxury on a real good team. The giants need to win at the line more before these other positions come into play. Forget picks for a second, would you rather have a dominate O line or upgraded secondary? I feel like Fano is boring but could be the overall better step forward. I’d take either guy but it’s an interesting spot to be in regardless.

  13. If we didn’t value McKinney or Love enough to resign them, then why draft one at 5?

  14. Draft the best player, especially when our D line is quite good and Flott and Adebo decent enough. That’s Downs. Or another WR.

  15. Everyone seems to like Sean Taylor a lot … but he wasn’t as good as Polamalu, Dawkins, Reed, Lynch, Harrison. Am I mis-remembering?

  16. Downs + trade for interior d line help and the defense is completely reinvented.

Outside rushing with the right defensive coordinator is already pretty freakin good.

  17. Kyle Hamilton was a consensus top 5 pick until he ran a 4.7 and dropped to 14
