Rooney Rule was altered after 2022. Two in person (ie Vance Joseph doesn’t count) interviews with minority candidates must occur before making a hiring at HC.
Additionally there are NO head coach interviews in person for anyone still employed until next week at the earliest, meaning the Vance Joseph interview doesn’t count. If he comes in next week, it will. Kafka won’t count as he’s not external.
Net.. this might take some time
“Clubs must conduct an in-person interview with at least two external diverse — minority and/or female — candidates for any GM or head coaching interview.”

I have been wondering, who are the candidates that:
* Their demographic fills the Rooney Rule requirements
* Is a legitimate contender, not just a space filler
The whole “interview process” feels more like a formality. I have to imagine the Giants, or most NFL teams, already have their top candidates selected.
Such a sham rule.
Antonio Pierce is one, will need one more. Or they just bring is someone random to do it, and it isn’t reported. Raiders did that when they hired Gruden IIRC.
The Rooney rule was well meaning but clearly it’s just a sham at this point. It’s not helping anyone. Do I know what the answer is. Nope.
I know the focus every year is in the amount of black head coaches. But I’d be curious to know the make up of the position coaches and low level assistants. Everyone starts at the bottom of the ladder.
Look at former giant davis Webb. Rode the bench but then parlayed it into become a QB coach for Denver and is a name floated for HC jobs.
How many black players take that route? Looking at this coaching cycle how many black coordinators are hot? Maybe Brian Flores?
I feel bad for the minority coaches who get thrown into these sham interviews
NFL owners are primarily white men and humans have demonstrated a pattern of hiring whereby they are more likely to offer opportunities to those of “similar likeness”. This provides minority candidates the opportunity to at least have a conversation that they otherwise would not have gotten.
You can argue about inefficiencies but the spirit of the rule has likely produced positive outcomes for deserving and qualified minority candidates.
Can’t we just bring in Rooney Mara and Jessica Tisch and knock out two quick interviews?

I hate this rule and that’s speaking as a minority. It’s a sham. Hire based on merit. If Tomlin was to get fired instead of Harbaugh teams would be lining up for him IMO
Terrible rule – so insulting to the candidates. I guess Pierce will be taking one for the team here.
I actually feel bad for a lot of the minority HC candidates because they never know if they are being interviewed because of true interest or formality. In a year with 6 openings so far, a minority coach could go on several interviews, having put a lot of time into preparing, and just be used to fulfill the rule.
The white talent pool for coaching jobs is far larger than black talent pool based purely on Demographics and qualification. It’s not based on aptitude just shear numbers, therefore a majority of candidates and number of coaches would be overwhelmingly white. The counter is that a majority of the players are black, therefore the same representation of black people should be in the coaching ranks. This is a misnomer. The physical requirements to coach are far different than the requirements to play, therefore standard demographic paradigms apply to coaching searches. I think a larger missed opportunity is the lack of Asian coaches in the NFL. I am not being facetious.
All good points here. The leagues has over 70% black players but less than 20% black coaches. Something ain’t right about that no matter how you see it…
How is this not grossly insulting to the guys that are obviously brought in just to check a box?
honest question here – what happens if you don’t? like do you just get a fine? Does Goodell cry about it? Bc if it’s just a fine then Mara/Tisch just got 1B to sell 10% of the team so pony up boys and pay the fine to lock in Harbaugh
Bring in Flores & Salah
This rule is fucking retarde(d). Why as a minority coach should I waste my time going for an interview when I know that they even bother to have an interview because of a rule instead of being qualified.
Diversity hiring/interviewing because of needing to fill in a checkbox because of a rule is never good.
The Giants better take every rule seriously this hiring cycle. Can’t forget this is the first time a job has come open since Brian Flores lawsuit which is still ongoing.
I mean, this is kinda what you guys voted for lol
This hurts no one and long term helps diversify the predominantly white workplace. With the recent rise in white nationalism it’s embarrassing to oppose this.
The Rooney rule is good in theory but in practice ends up being a complete joke that does more harm than good.
I feel like it’s more degrading for a black man to come all the way in for an interview only to be treated like an afterthought who’s only purpose being brought in was to be a number to fill while the team hires the actual coach they want right after; rather than not even get the call in the first place.
A better rule would be maybe making sure a team has atleast one minority coach on the staff in any capacity; then atleast guys are getting paid and can actually move up gradually in the league
I’m gonna just say I think Anthony Weaver (who I’m not hearing as much but Saratoga Hughes grad plus went to Notre Dame) and Vance Joseph (I know he failed the first time in Denver) are good candidates that I would be more drawn to see run a team that does need to get back their defensive identity. I put them in the same field as Minter and Shula. With all it’s a question of their offensive staff.
I know Flores is never going to be an interview for the team again. Unless we hit a home run on this next hire I have an inkling the Maras will regret not choosing him over Daboll much like Wellington regretting not getting Coughlin the first time around.
I imagine this is kinda humiliating for some of these candidates. I mean Brian Flores is an example but I’d be curious what some of these guys think about the rule. Anyone know of any quotes or interviews with minority candidates who get flown around to have “interviews” when they know they’re just checking a box?
I am all for more minority coaches and diversity I just wonder if there’s a better way
The thing about the Rooney Rule is that every minority coach interviewed but not hired makes the rule seem like people are just interviewing them to comply, which then prompts comments from the media accordingly.
In the court of public opinion, it seems that there is no way to win unless you actually hire a minority candidate.
