Yeah I have been thinking that the system needs to be made so people stick to it and if its not working modify it. You can see the D man rushing the o zone before the winger has got there and if the wing gets the puck taken off them the d man is not there to clean up then it results in odd man rushes. Happened yesterday also.
Porque no los dos?
It’s the wrong system for young inexperienced players and large slow veteran defenseman who play a 2010 game.
It relies on good positioning, good stick handling, fast skating, and above all else good decision making/judgement. They need higher hockey IQ. You can watch several videos and replay of what they do. They send a second skater to hoard the puck handler, lose the 50/50 battle, and the puck handler passes to the opponent the second skater should’ve been covering. They also don’t keep their sticks down in front of the net and usually end up taking penalties trying to fight off anyone blocking the goalie.
Our defense has been really bad, but our forwards also refuse to forecheck at all. I mean Terry hasn’t even logged a single hit this year. Not that Terry is a hitter, but the fact that he hasn’t involved himself in a board battle that accidentally got clocked as a hit is really telling how passive our forwards have been playing this year.
It’s a bit of everything. Our systems prioritize early zone exits to capitalize on our good rush-scoring, which has worked at times this season, but it also is better suited for a team that is better at defending against those dangerous chances back the other way. Even with those systems and our defense, things worked out early in the season, partially because we were shooting at a pretty high rate, but also because our goaltending could keep out some of the mistakes.
The last ~15 games, every last opportunity against us has gone in the back of the net. I love Dosty and I’m a huge goalie defender in general but goals like the first one against Buffalo have to be saved at some point.
I’ve also noticed that our guys make fundamental hockey mistakes an alarming amount of the time… we fail to connect on so many passes for no reason, or we pass at multiple defender’s sticks, or we start leaving the zone before anyone can actually control the puck. I feel like the “cheating” system could work if we’re a better team at gaining control of the puck, but if there’s a board battle we nearly always lose them with a couple guys halfway down the ice already.
The hallmark of a great coach is the ability to adapt once opposing teams begin to anticipate the system. Q is, of course, a highly successful coach, though the condensed schedule has given limited opportunities to implement significant adjustments. It will be interesting to see what changes he makes during the upcoming break.
