MacKinnon Was Not Happy, When They Drafted Makar?!

Before they became one of the most dominant duos in the NHL, Nathan MacKinnon admits he wasn’t happy when the Avalanche drafted Cale Makar. At the time, doubts existed. Today, it sounds almost unbelievable. What started with uncertainty turned into championship chemistry — a reminder that even elite players don’t always see greatness coming. 🏒🔥

  1. Biggest mistake that philly ever made not picking Makar. If I remember right one of the top scouts for Philly was pleading with hextal not to take Patrick and that Makar was a stud but like always hexy had to be the smartest guy in the room.

  2. MacKinnon is godtier but you damn well he knows exactly who went 3rd in 2017 lmao. With Heiskanen missing the first round last season, NMK nearly won the series himself. Against Heiska in '24 NMK managed all of 2G & 5P

  3. The rules are different now. Makar wanted to play NCAA. The CHL was considered semi-professional and he would’ve been ineligible to play NCAA if he played in what probably have been in the WHL( since he’s from western Canada)

  4. The stars made a good pick in Heiskanen. Colorado made a great pick in Makar. Although, they might’ve been able to pick him later but I’m not a scout or gm so I don’t know what the thought on him was at the time.

  5. He then air dropped out of college straight into the 1st round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and they proceeded to embarrass the Calgary Flames.

  6. You need to look at from Nate perspective, he wasn't clowning on Cale, it was more the league he was in. You are told your entire life to get into the top junior teams for a shot at the show. So from the jump he was like "a kid from THAT league went 4th?? nah, no way" lol
