[Foul Territory] Alex Bregman became frustrated with the Red Sox because they were unwilling to meet his market after their initial offer, says AJ Pierzynski. The Red Sox then refused to believe Bregman’s camp when they told them they had a better offer on the table.

  1. “I have a better offer on the table”

    “No you don’t”

“I do, it’s from the Cubs”

“Bregman you could have at least picked a convincing team”

  2. To be fair to the Red Sox, I also wouldn’t have believed that the Cubs were offering more money.

  3. Oof, thats a rough Scott Boras burn.

That’s the “Bregman’s camp” they didn’t want to believe.

  4. If they weren’t willing to pay Bregman his market value, are they going to pay Bo Bichette who can’t really play SS and needs to move to 2B?

  5. “Tom Ricketts and Jed Hoyer are offering me more money”

“Sure Alex, and Sydney Sweeney DM’d me last night”

  6. Hey, at least the Red Sox didn’t alienate and trade away their best position player when they signed Bregman, then trade away the best prospect* they acquired for half a season of Dustin May!

*I’m actually not that high on Tibbs personally but I’m choosing to ignore that for the narrative

  7. The team that has signed 0 free agents this offseason sure seems to act like they understand the market.

  8. 1. They traded a future HOFer in Mookie Betts because they wanted to save money to sign their other star players
    2. They let Xander Bogaerts walk because they wanted to sign Devers (this was a smart move)
    3. They signed Rafael Devers for many years because they wanted to rebuild around Devers
    4. They signed Alex Bregman for a short period of time, a guy who plays the same position as Devers
    5. They never informed Devers that he was going to change positions
    6. They waited until the season was about to start to inform Devers he was not going to play third base anymore
    7. Because of that Devers spent the entire off-season focused on playing third base
    8. The fact Devers had to change positions mentally affected him and it made slump pretty bad because he wasn’t used to playing DH and he mentally didn’t prepare for that in the offseason because the Red Sox never told him he was going to play DH, they let Devers know only when the season was about to start
    9. When Devers finally found himself and he started to get used to playing DH, the Red Sox asked him in the middle of the season to play another position, a position Devers had never played before
    10. Devers refused to play first base
    11. They immediately traded Devers to the West coast for practically nothing in order to get rid of him

Now they’ve lost Mookie, Devers and Bregman, 3 great players to build a team around

  9. In defense of the Red Sox, I also would think Bregman and team were bluffing if they told me the offer that he signed.

  10. I mean in fairness to the Sox, I also would not have believed that the Cubs had a higher deal.

  11. Braindead franchise.

You can’t be upset that you aren’t able to sign the guy when you were given a chance to counter offer.

  12. This is kind of interesting. The Red Sox not believing he had a better offer is a sign of disrespect. Red Sox FO looks crazy now. They traded Rafael Devers so Bregman could be the third baseman. Now Bregman walks and they have no third baseman.

  13. 23rd in payroll charging championship prices at the park. This is so embarrassing. It’s the same thing every offseason regardless of the GM. This is an ownership failure. It’s systemic.

  14. What a clown front office. Boston acting like they’re broke and the smartest guy in the room when they are clearly neither.

  15. I think there’s more fog of war in these negotiations than people realize, but this is legitimately the first time I’ve seen an organization be accused of straight up not believing the existence of a better offer. Usually these things are kind of played off as “Player got the offer they wanted and wanted to be done, so they didn’t come back to the team with the better offer” or something.

If this is true, it’s pretty damning of Boston’s front office.

  16. I know Red Sox traded Mookie, let Boegarts walk and then traded Devers. Now it looks like they balked on Bregman. I’m not very in tune with what is going on in Boston, but after hearing the Cubs signed him I started seeing all this discourse from fans and Boston media. I didn’t realize Bregman was an integral piece for Boston. The deal they gave him last year seemed like they wanted the ability to part as much as he did.

Can someone explain why this means as much as it does for the Red Sox?

  17. Boston calling his bluff feels like it could simply be the product of Boras’ tactics. He’s constantly blustering to the point that some GMs just think he’s full of shit. Sometimes they’re right, sometimes they’re wrong.
