  1. We know that these power rankings will always prioritize offense because a suffocating defense is only tolerable by the masses when it is dismantling the leagues villian.
    Edit: Narrative only???
How is it that the only narrative he can think of is the NFC west connection? I guess the Texans are just going to have to win to cause people to learn by proxy why this would mean so much to us. Texans vs Bears is newest against one of the leagues founding teams. Texans vs Rams actually has implications since it was the barely renamed Titans that the Greatest show on Turf took down for their superbowl. Texans vs Seahawks is literally the top 2 defenses by stud Defensive HCs and honestly the archetype could use some pushing since everyone is so overly enamoured with Offensive HC's despite the absolute torrid stink of many defenses that get absolutely neglected because of either offensive Toy syndrome or the one of the flus gooses many unnamed relatives.

  2. The only matchup I don't want is a Seahawks vs. Bills. I am a super-rabid Seattle fan, have been ever since the start of the team, so of course I want them to win the Lombardi trophy. But a guy I used to work with is a rabid fan of the Bills. We were the two guys in the office who could spout stats and game history on all sports at each other. I'm now retired so I don't have much contact with him beyond an occasional holiday text. But hoo doggie, if our teams met? Along with my desire to see the Hawks win, would be me knowing the pain Jimmy would feel to see his Bills get to the top of the mountain to only be denied once again. I don't want my team to be the one to bounce his.

  3. Pats Seahawks would be great! A chance for the Seahawks to make up for 2015 in some way and a chance for the Pats to make Sam Darnold see something worse than ghosts haha

  4. My actual prediction: Texans Bears (another really interesting story line unless you are a Panthers fan)
The game I wanna see the most: Bills Bears (probably two QBs that are so fun to watch when they get it going)
The biggest Narrative Bowl possible: Bills Niners (one of these teams HAS to get over the hump at some point right?)

  5. Bit underwhelmed by how many 49er selections there are. This isn't even the best 49ers team of the Shanahan era, and to be blunt Rich I think seeing the same team in every couple of years is boring as hell. There's no appeal to me as a non Californian to see this squad make it over the rest of the field other then "wow, they made it?" I think if this was a 49ers team that hadn't been there multiple times I'd be a little more receptive to the concept of banged up team going on a run. As it stands, the idea in reality to me is downright revolting. I also think the basis of "this team has more fans" is a terrible basis for a Superbowl.
Hell, I'm not even a fan of these two teams. But why not put Bears and the Texans there? Two defenses going at it that can force turnovers like crazy and carry young QB's who are both on rookie deals still. Both teams have shown that the scoreboard at halftime means zilch, so you don't have people mentally filtering out. Both organizations have had long awaiting fanbases thirsty for a championship (in Houstons case they've never been not even as the Oilers in the SB era which immediately makes this more interesting to me then the "hand me an appearance" award of the Broncos/49ers/Patriots). You have one of the best offensive minds vs one of the best defensive minds. Both of which are young too, and can have future matchups. Hell Rich there's even a former CHIEF playing a prominent role since you're still whining about them not being in the post season! What's not to like?

  6. Bills vs niners would be the most justified super bowl. Imagine the two most injured teams in the league both going through a three-game gauntlet of road games while decimated with injuries and making it to the big dance. That would be incredible.

  7. This is a dumb approach to Power Rankings, as is the regular season process.

What makes more sense would be a weekly regular season top 16, 14 likely playoff participants + 2 bubble teams.

Prior to Wild Weekend, pick your playoff bracket winners, review picks against reality, explain why you were wrong, what did you learn…put emphasis on the playoffs as a bad narrative revealer.

  8. I'm surprised that Rich didn't mention that the Number 1 Super Bowl matchup (49er's vs, Bills) that Chris Berman has been wanting for the last 37 years seeing that Rich worked for ESPN.
