The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly considering trading for Winnipeg Jets defenceman Luke Schenn, according to TSN’s Chris Johnston.

Johnston shared his report during an episode of The Chris Johnston Show released on Monday, stating that the Leafs targeting Schenn for a third stint makes sense given their limited tradeable assets.

“There’s already some rumblings around that they’re even looking at a third trip through with Luke Schenn right now,” he said. “Obviously at this stage of Luke’s career, I think that the acquisition cost would be more modest and worked really well with him and Morgan Rielly. So we’ll see if that’s something that comes to fruition, but certainly have heard some talk in that direction.”

Trading more assets for a depth D who’s allergic to the puck and has been healthy-scratched on one of the worst teams in the league, again? Pass.

  1. Is he better than Benoit? Maybe as someone who comes in and out of the lineup? I don’t know. $2.75 million too…

  2. Tre loves the elderly so this sounds plausible. It’s nice that the team woke up and we’re in a playoff position again, but I wouldn’t trade any assets for the playoffs. We’re going to get smoked in the first two rounds either way.

  3. Defensive depth is always good… but hes not the same player any more. It really depends on the price.

  4. He was good during his 2nd stint. Actually found a player that works with Rielly. Was surprised when the Leafs didn’t re-sign him, so I’d take him for depth if the price is right.

  5. Johnston is just total click bait trash now. He used to be an insider but now is up there with kypreos

  6. Even a 7th feels like too much. Carlo is doing a pretty good job of being the Mo whisperer now that he has 2 functioning feet, and we don’t need another 6D, when we already have 6 of them between the Leafs and Marlies

  7. Depends if Tanev is put long term. If he is,

    Rielly – Carlo

    OEL – Stretcher

    Benoit – McCabe

Doesn’t inspire confidence. Having Schenn at least lets McCabe play on his left side which he’s better at. However, anything more than a 4th or 5th is too much for him.

  8. Can’t be more than a really late pick or futures. The right side is okay. Stecher has really fit in there and solidified things.

  9. For the right price it could make sense. We’re down tanev for the season and we’ve been had a steady dose of myers this year which has reached a rotation between him and benoit. The way this deal makes sense is if the coaching staff prefer mccabe with stecher rather than OEL. If OEL is on your third pair you’d probably want him on the left side, which makes having a RHD in schenn make sense, because myers can not be on a playoff roster. OEL can move the puck and schenn would be there to replace benoits physicality. Overall I think Benny is better than schenn, so this would have to be an internal decision that OEL on the left with schenn is better than OEL on the right with benoit. Or youre getting him strictly in case of another injury to avoid playing myers again this year.

Secondly, I wouldn’t be trading anything remotely meaningful, like a 6th or 7th, maybe swap for myers and let the jets take a chance on him since hes younger. Otherwise this is a nah from me and id rather see the team sell off a couple pieces for futures than pray for a team of destiny type run.

  10. If Benoit is a ‘lock’ on the third pair, he should be paired with a guy who can move the puck. I like Schenn, but I’d look more for a TWD for that reason

  11. no thanks. He was already degraded when we had him what 3 years ago? I assume he’s not getting better with age at this point.

  12. Yes, we need another big and slow defenseman. That seems like a smart allocation of resources.

  13. I’d have been open to this if Carlo wasn’t back and playing well. Schenn is no better than Benoit as a 3rd pair guy. Only way I see it working is if you plan on putting Schenn with Rielly full time but idk if Schenn can still perform to the level he needs to for that type of role. He can barely crack the lineup on one of the worst teams in the league.

  14. hes better than Benoit but its the consequence of stupid management that the team doesn’t already have someone better than Benoit

  15. I like Schenn, but this ship has sailed. I mean we have Carlo, Benoit, etc – what value will Schenn add?? Stop the nostalgia signings – that was a Dubas thing.

  16. The Eraser did good on his 2nd stint.. He made the most of his time 1st run, and 2nd run..

    Beloved by fans..

I’d need a reasonable price though, not same price Dubas paid..

  17. Depends on the price. 4th is the absolute biggest asset I would move. Even that probably seems high but remember with the cap going up known assets are going up in value, whereas lower picks will take time to catch up. We’re regularly seeing depth players get paychecks that would have been unfathomable not long ago.

  18. This thread forgets that injuries happen (aka this season) and the playoffs are physical. Zero downside to bringing him in as a 7/8 dman for the late round pick he will cost.

  19. Everybody shit on us bringing is Schenn a couple of years ago, and he was an absolute beauty in the playoffs.

If he can play anything like that, I’m all for it.
