The Pittsburgh Pirates have been linked to multiple third basemen, but two potential names can likely be crossed off the list. After the Philadelphia Phillies missed out on Bo Bichette, it feels safe to say that Alec Bohm won’t be an option.

There are others, too.

According to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, the Pirates aren’t expected to sign Eugenio Suarez, despite some believing they would earlier in the offseason.

“I mean they checked in on him this offseason," Stumpf said, per Dominic Campbell. "There is, I guess, for a lack of better way of saying it, a ‘level of interest in him’, but I just don’t know how it’s going to work. The money that he is going to need to be signed, I just don’t see the Pirates having it without making other moves to facilitate it.

“I don’t see them dumping Mitch Keller for pennies on the dollar to sign Suarez, this type of deal. They have been in contact with him. To borrow a phrase from former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. ‘Never say never, but never.’ I would look elsewhere for the third base answer."

  1. There’s payroll limitations and the pirates aren’t going to sign him because of that. Honestly it’s a joke that we’re not going to expand payroll enough to compete during the skenes era especially after they said they were going to be aggressive this offseason. Lowe and ryan o’hearn aren’t enough to make this a playoff team but bob nutting dosen’t give a crap per usual.

  2. If the new CBA includes a cap floor of say 130 million then bob nutting will have to sell the team. If he can’t even afford to go above 100 million then how the hell is this clown going to reach a capfloor? I’m ready for changes and I want a capfloor and cap ceiling in the mlb next CBA or i’m done watching cause of crap like nutting while the dodgers, mets etc getting everyone good.

  3. Based on this he’s pulling this out of his ass as he doesn’t *think* they’ll increase payroll. He’s probably right, but this isn’t reporting, it’s speculation
