Boo Bichette: Phillies stunned to lose star, J.T. Realmuto returns

What the hell happened?

The Phillies offered Bo Bichette a seven-year, $200 million contract on Thursday. They thought they had him. Then – poof – he’s gone. Bichette stunned everybody in baseball, when he accepted a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets instead.

The Phillies followed that massive disappointment by signing J.T. Realmuto to a three-year, $45 million deal.

What happened with Bichette? What do we think about the Realmuto deal?
What comes next?

  1. Phils should sign Eugenio Suarez to a 1-2 yr contract to replace Bohm. That's potentially 4 players (Schwarb, Harper, Garcia, Genio) that could hit 30+ hrs.

  2. These short opt out deals are the worst. Too player friendly. Giving up multiple draft picks for who knows how many years of a player. Phils are right to balk at that BS.

  3. I'd rather they save the commitment for after the season. Trade for rentals at the deadline. Go for the Skubal sweepstakes. Tarik would get the Phillies past the Dodgers.

  4. JT Still has best pop time, hits, and controls pitching staff better than any other.. his intangibles are what makes him BEST catcher in baseball ⚾️

  5. Regarding Castellanos: what do you guys mean by another team could get him for the "minimum" if we release him? I thought that if we release him, we than still owe him 20 mil of course, but he'll not be on the team. He'll be sitting at home collecting. BUT, if another team then wants to pick him up, they have to pay his contract if they don't make a deal with the Phillies. That's how I thought it worked. What I'm getting from what you guys are saying is, if we release him, he still gets paid by the Phils for the year, but if another team picks him up, say a week or month into the season, they can pay him the vet minimum on top of that? So he still gets his full contract from the Phils AND his current team pays him a vet minimum? That doesn't sound right to me. Please explain better.

  6. The Phillies got played. Loser organization that is cooked. The JT move was a panic move and now add him back to the group of washed players in their mid 30s. Dave Dombrowski has been a disappointment since getting here. They are a wildcard exit in the playoffs.

  7. These guys have a great podcast.. but I predicted ahead f time what they were going to say. Of course, nothing negative about the phils. Ruben mentions the panic moves by LA and the mets, but forgot to mention the panic move by the phils about JT. Lets try to keep it real, boys. The bottom line is the phils continue to have a bunch of strikeouts, no protection for Harper, and they are a year older. Nothing is Dombrowski's fault of course. Let's bring back Whit Merrifield on a one year deal.

  8. The “we’re still a stacked team” arguments annoys the pants of me. It’s not untrue, but come on, guys.. not right now.

  9. Nice channel. I enjoy it and subscribed. I am a Yankees fan but do not hate on other teams. I thought the Phillies would get Bichette and the Tucker would go to the Mets. Boy was I wrong. Cody Bellinger is still available now. cannot blame Dave Dombroski he did offer what Bo wanted 7yrs for 200 million. But Bo did not take it. I think Dodgers got Tucker to keep him away from the Blue Jays. Dodgers do not need Tucker really! I am a yankees fan but would not get Bellinger 7 years for a ton of money, even though I like him.

  10. Honestly, now I'm wishing we kept Eduardo Tait and just made bullpen additions through free agency. We need to get younger and Tait was moving his way up. Dombrowski is hurting our ability to evolve and get younger.

  11. These guys are clueless, JT is not THAT essential. Answer me this, if he’s so essential, why haven’t we won shit? At some point these pitchers have to throw to someone instead of JT. Pitchers that are good will continue to be good. Stop the glaze old heads.

  12. They couldn't sign Bo at that price because Harper would have been in the office crying like a baby for a raise the moment they did. I'd bet the farm on it, and they didn't want to pay Bryce more. There is more to this story than what we are hearing in the media. I wouldn't doubt if Bryce was already threatening a desire for a raise if they matched that Mets offer and the front office chickened out.

  13. Of course Ruben is defending the Phillies. How is it being "unreasonable" for Mets going for Bichette and improving their team in a big way while the Phillies are reduced to running it back YET again with their flawed aging lineup that cant play smallball. Give it up Ruben. Middleton and Dombrowski just care about filling the Bank and a 88 win team that has no shot at winning the world series. Completely insulting to the phillies fanbase .

  14. Ruben having no problem with Phillies giving 3Yrs and 45M to a 35 Yr old Catcher (who barely had a .700 OPS) saying its "Not my money" …..But then claiming the Mets for being "unreasonable" spending their money (which isnt Ruben's money either) on a much much better player. What a bad look

  15. Calling Mets offer unreasonable pretty much sums up the small minded mentality of the Phillies reaction overall. This is what’s happening in MLB. Don’t you think if Bichette wanted to be a phillie, he would be?

All reports are saying the Mets plan was to sign both Tucker and then bichette. This was not a pivot from Tucker. Phillies def used like Mets were with Tucker and Diaz. This is what happens when you swim in the deep end. Give Phillies a chance to rebound and then make judgement

  16. Also what makes anyone think a 7 year $200 million deal is this unbelievable offer for a player that age of that caliber. Gonna learn quickly. Did you not see bregman deal who is 31 years old???

  17. The thing that pisses me off the most the Mets stink, this isnt going to do anything for them. They gave him an opt out because they know they suck. The Phillies have a chance to compete why not mention an opt out if they didnt.

  18. I disagree with Ruben on this. The BoSox certainly didn't sign Ranger out of panic. One – because his deal was done prior to the Tucker signing; Two – they're deep in the outfield. They may actually trade one or too to open up playing time for others; & three – their priority was in pitching. They inquired both Kansas City (Ragans) & Minnesota (Joe Ryan & Pablo Lopez) but the asking price in prospects was too high. They needed a #2-#3 starter to go with Crochet desperately as Sonny Gray's only got one year left on his deal if I remember correctly, and he's getting into his later 30s. The Blue Jays on the other hand did want Tucker and were in deep negotiations along with the Mets – and I assume the Dodgers (though I didn't hear much about the Dodgers interest until they actually signed him).

  19. Bregman goes for $35 mill per year for 5 years but Mets offer to Bo is unreasonable and $28.5 per year for Bo should have got it done??? How do these people have jobs honestly.

  20. Players and their agents are becoming more and more creative with their deals. The Phils still live in an era where longer years would be more beneficial for both the player and themselves for both player long-term security and the Phil's keeping the AAV down to a minimum. If I'm a player in Bo's situation, knowing I'm still in my 20s, the option is easy. $42M which could be $47M for one season and then I can hit a very weak FA market next season is a win for Bo. Or if he has a down first season with the Mets (which happens with many FA signings), here's another $42M for 2027 and can hit the FA market after that. That $200M offer the Phils were willing to go could be $300M+ for Bo if things work out right.

  21. The bigger question mark is their OF over these next two years. Phils will be aggressive next year, all is not lost.
Bohm is most likely gone, need to figure out 3B.
Curious if they make a big move at the deadline. Be nice to have more pop in the lineup.

  22. I have to second what billrueter246 said 3 hours ago "I don’t think anyone likes the JT signing as much as these 3 guys." I'm guessing they eat, drink and bullshit with him therefore they are in a must celeabrate this signing but anyone in the know would know that this is not a good signing. I loved JT a few years ago but his time has expired. Maybe we get one more year of desent numbers so lets cross our fingers but I still think without making a move like aquiring the only major player left Bellinger this team is done. There are far too many question marks to sit pat with the team we currently have.
