MLB Ranks Redsox’s Mikey Romero Top 5 3B Prospect in baseball

They also ranked early and tolle as top-10 LHP prospects
Pleasant surprise. For a 1st rounder it’s funny how little attention he gets given the strength of the system (including recent graduates). The 2026 ETA is also a surprise. I still think he’s more likely a trade piece than a long term Red Sox but happy to see, regardless.
Not a lot said about him in the article. None of his individual tools rate the highest on the list, and neither his floor nor ceiling is rated as highest. Guess I’ll have to read updates on his progress elsewhere; I don’t usually follow prospects, so predigested round-up articles like this are where I occasionally do get news.
3B is one of those positions that is usually pretty barren in the minor leagues so these types of rankings aren’t super indicative of anything. Most future 3B are playing shortstop in the mid-to-lower minors.
Not saying he can’t be good or anything but 3B is a very weak position right now.
This is obviously cool, but should come with some caveats…like none of the top ten 3Bers on this list made MLB’s top 100, so this is a weak position right now.
I’d be curious to see the new writeup for Romero, but it looks like he recently sold out for power and now struggles with Ks — but he came up as a low-power contact hitter. Maybe he can mash the two together now, haha? Glove doesn’t get huge marks.
Wonder if he’s a breakout candidate?
*In a year when no 3B is in the top 100
I don’t want to be overly negative but I just have a gut feeling that Romero is going to be one of those prospects you hear about, you hear about, you hear about but they never end up making it or if they do it’s for a quick cup of coffee.
His exit velocity and barrel rates are promising, but I’d like to see an improvement with his Swinging Strike and Chase Rates. ([Stats from Prospect Savant](https://prospectsavant.com/player/702540)) The dwindling 2B/3B options does make me wonder if we try to tread water with Romy for a little while to see if either Romero or Arias are able to contribute this season.
Soxprospects.com has him at #13 in the system, 4th best infielder
His profile on Soxprospects isn’t super positive though
He’s hardly a 3B… He was drafted as a SS and split time between SS & 3B in AA and AAA. They actually give him reps all over, which makes sense because they’re desperate for non-SS bats last season (and this).
I’m not particularly high on him, but he did come on strong toward the end of the year, so hopefully he continues to develop.
I love the thought process of our fan base yes every prospect in the system will be a plus positive, I mean that doesn’t ever happen in baseball but hey we’re the red sox so it should lol
