Yes. The term game manager comes to mind. If CJ had just protected the ball we probably win. We didn’t need Cam Newton. We needed Joe Flacco
With how good our defense is, Agree.
We don’t need to have Superman at QB. Just someone good enough to take what the defense gives you.
Agree, there’s a saying you want to end every drive in a kick. Extra point, Field goal or punt. That’s the offense main goal
One hundred percent. The QB doesn’t like what he sees….change the call. He sees pressure change the protection. That’s what a good QB does. Especially since the Texans want to be a run first team like DeMeco always says. CJ doesn’t have to play hero ball all day long.
Of course. It’s the baseline. It’s why running backs almost always get benched immediately when they fumble. It’s why half the sub and announcers wanted Mills in the second half. It’s just that qbs are thought of as the franchise , so it becomes something different when you bench them.
Yes. You adjust the play presnap because you’ve analyzed the risk that the coverage is wrong for the play call.
You choose which receiver to throw to based on risk of throwing into coverage.
You perform drills on taking the snap to mitigate the risk of dropping the ball on the handoff.
You place the thrown ball where the receiver can catch it safely and mitigate the risk of injury.
Then why is CJ the qb?
That’s the baseline yes. Once you proven you can do that, you can move on to making more higher risk higher reward plays. But I think the message here is simply “get back to basics and stop trying so hard”.
If Cj just plays like Brock purdy next year it’s a Super Bowl appearance at least
-ish.
It’s a philosophy question as much as anything. If you are trying to build a team based around offense, the main role of the quarterback is to diagnose/exploit the defense and score points. If you are trying to build based around defense, the first job of the QB is “don’t beat us for them”. Considering that DeMeco has flat out said that their mindset is “we score seven, we win”, it’s a philosophy that makes sense.

I thinnk one of the biggest problems (other than CJ’s implosion) is the lack of a running game. It seems like they go into every season with the intention of being a run first team but it never works out. That means CJ feels like he has to do too much… Which has largely been true. I’m not excusing his bad play and if we had a better option would like to go towards that but realistically we’ve got at least one more year of him at the helm. We need to seriously invest in a stronger running game so he doesn’t get tempted to do too much
I’m not a Texans fan, but I do have a question.
You are guys are looking to ship CJ out when he has brought you guys back after the Watson mayhem, and had some good playoff success in his first 3 years. Which is a large difference from Chargers fans who love Herbert but he has not won one playoff game, and has played absolutely awful in every single one.
Why the different reactions for those two players?
I disagree. Your number one job is putting points on the board.
The best way to do that is to mitigate risk, but not by playing so conservatively that putting points on the board becomes significantly harder.
If we could score 10 more points per game than we currently do but give up 2 turnovers a game we probably net out positive on that, our defense doesn’t often allow for 10 points off 2 turnovers.
They why didn’t we swap to Mills at the half. Did that ever get answered?
At the very least, get it to King Kaimi on a possession. Punts better than INTs. Probably could’ve clawed and kicked our way to a win against the Pats if CJ had gotten it into Fairbairn territory or punted instead of the 4+ INTS and 5 fumbles.
Well, glad to know our GM and Head Coach are fucking idiots. The number one job of a QB is to score points. That’s it.
I don’t understand why Mills wasn’t given a shot in the 2nd half.
Demeco could have easily said “CJ, you don’t have it today. We’re gonna give Mills a shot.”
Who cares about hurt feelings. You don’t put a player above team success.
So you used a 2nd overall pick to achieve the job of a game manager?
Hard agree. Anything else is just extracurricular work.
Also Nick Caserio…”We going to run it back.”
This makes me believe that Caserio is displeased and would be willing to move on from CJ.
Disagree.
You need to strike a balance between ‘let er rip’ (careless, bombs away, high risk) and ‘mitigate risk on every play’ (lower risk, live to play another down, but instilling a mindset to always play it safe to the point that you’re ineffective, playing scared and conservative). The right answer is for the QB to take on ‘acceptable’ risk — that way you still give them the freedom to use their god given talents in the proper mindset to stay aggressive — as opposed to pounding risk avoidance into their heads to the extent they’re afraid to make mistakes… Hopefully we’re saying the same thing but it sure didn’t sound like it.
He’s right of course. Before you do anything you have to make sure it’s not to the other teams benefit. That goes without saying.
I think a lot of fans including myself took “CJ is our franchise QB.” and his rookie year performance to mean he was going to be our Lamar, Josh, Patrick, Goff, Stafford etc. Where he’s supposed to go out and sling it around and gun for points. And put the offense in his back. But obviously he can’t do that playing like he has. So now CJ the superstar pinpoint gunslinger is a fairy tale. It’s always been CJ “Alex Smith” Stroud in their eyes. That explains the we want 20-25 passing attempts mentality I had been asking about all year.
Exactly. Look what Darnold is doing in Seattle.
You telling me Darnold is better than CJ.
Not looking good.
Without the turnovers the Texans would definitely be a super bowl team. Even if he just got a few first downs and maybe a touchdown, but zero turnovers. Every time he turns the ball over he gives the other team a massive advantage with field positioning and doesnt allow the Texans defense to control the game.
tbf this mentality is also part of what’s holding the team back. They want him to be a game manager but when he had success as a rookie he was far from that. I notice the conflict in CJ everytime he snaps the ball. He is hesitant because there’s a plan he’s gotta stick to, but he’s not great at that. Maybe that’s why his S2 scores were so low. He isn’t a big brain thinker, he’s more instinctive and naturally talented.
Every play? No. Not at all.
If you have CJ Stroud and a generational defense, absolutely, yes.
If you have an elite QB you let them sling it and make plays. The good will far outweigh the bad most of the time.
MITIGATE RISK???
THEY WANT AN ACTUARY AT QB LMAO
They said “**You are** number one job is to mitigate risk, every single play.”
