Timing is shocking. All the best to him. Glad I never have to see him carve up the Mets again
rest easy legend. san diego loves you
Nope don’t like that
Kershaw, Darvish, Rich Hill. End of an era man
i’ll never forget you trying your absolute best to carry the sorry offense over the finish line in 2024 NLDS game 5 🫡
Little shocked to see him go out with so much time left on that extension, but I respect him all the more for it. Great career for the guy
Edit: The initial report was a bit misleading, but it’s an honorable thing to do nonetheless

It’s a noble thing to retire when you know you’re probably not gonna pitch for two more years and you probably won’t be the pitcher you were before anyways, but it also sucks because Yu isn’t retiring on his terms.
95% of players would have just pretended to rehab and gotten the money

Does he leave all the money on the table? If so, Padres kinda lucked out.
>Now, a year later, Darvish and others involved in the process have said some details have to be worked out in terms of how much of the remaining money he will forfeit. But multiple people familiar with the process said any buyout would involve Darvish giving up the bulk of what he would be owed and that the Padres are set to realize a significant savings over the next three years. That money is intended to be used to help make the team better.
>“As far as leaving lots of money,” Darvish said in a recent interview, “I look at it as that was never mine to begin with, especially considering the money I haven’t physically earned yet.”
All-timer class move from a player. Could have a significant impact on the Padres, considering reports that they’ve been strapped for cash.
Edit: Given that this comment is at the top I feel I should add the statement Yu’s agent has put out:
>“Yu has not made a final decision yet. This is a complicated matter we are still working through.”
I believe Twitter links are banned here but the update can be found on Feinsand, Nightengale, Dennis Lin, and Alden Gonzalez’s pages right now.
I still owe Yu an apology for 2017.
💔
YU 😭
I’ll miss watching him a ton, just on an entertainment level one of my favorite pitchers in the league no matter who he played for. Hope that making this choice allows him to have a smooth rehab and lets him enjoy a healthy retirement.
Respect the dude
He had a good career. There were quite a few Japanese pitchers who were flops from the mid 2000’s and early 2010’s were people had some reservations about Darvish. But he was a very good pitcher when he was healthy, he came in and was an impact.
One of the greats. I’m gonna miss watching him pitch in a Padres uniform. Really hoping his combined success across NPB and MLB drives him into Cooperstown in the coming years, and I hope he sticks around in the org.
Im gonna miss you darvish 🙁
Dang this sucks gonna miss watching Yu

Saw him pitch in the NPB before he came over, and he fanned nine like it was nothing.
Happy retirement.

…
Darvish definitely identifies more strongly as Japanese but he was always very important to me as being basically the first player with close Iranian descent to make the major leagues.
My favorite pitcher ever as a young Rangers fan in the mid 2010s. Dude was a bonafide Ace for the first couple years here
Will always love Yu, glad I got to watch him pitch for the Cubs ❤️
Iranian legend
Fuck the Astros. Yu Darvish went his whole career wanting to get to the World Series and when he finally did for the first and now only time he ran into the cheaters
I was glad many of the same guys were still around for the bubble World Series win but wish Yu had still been there too
> You may have seen an article, and although I am leaning towards voiding the contract, there’s still a lot that has to be talked over with the Padres so the finer details are yet to be decided.
Also I will not be announcing my retirement yet.
Right now I am fully focused on my rehab for my elbow, and if I get to a point where I can throw again, I will start from scratch again to compete.
If once I get to that point I feel I can’t do that, I will announce my retirement.

He tweeted that this is not true and he’s still planning on playing once his rehab is done
do people know this isn’t true

And he lasted longer than Yuli Gurriel did.
Cheers on a great career, Yu.
