The Commanders Are Making The Same Mistakes As Before?!
The Washington Commanders are entering the offseason with major roster holes that need to be filled and with the amount of cap space the team has, it should be possible to build a competitive team during the offseason. Kevin Sheehan reacts to an article from Commanders’ insider Ben Standig that may prove otherwise and drop hints that maybe the Commanders won’t be big spenders in the offseason like many fans would expect.

I think Josh Harris is telling AP to be cheap and if they’re trying to be a winning franchise, that’s not going to work
Karl Scott coming here would be the craziest thing to happen since Dallas traded Parsons to a NFC team. To go from a SB team to us, with all our problems when there are better situations out there. I'm expecting Raheem Morris or Al Harris; DQ's friends, then new HC/full reset. We have too many holes from 1-yr rentals and cap not being used. Look at last year and how much cap space we had. Tired of players leaving here snd doing better elsewhere, like Forbes and Curl.
Truths. 1- The 2024 season was so importable it defies logic. The team severely over performed. 2025 is who the WFT has been since swapping owners. 2- TM is not a WR1. Team should have traded him away for assets. The GM utterly failed in those negotiations. 3- ownership isn’t spending until the vanity palace is build. 4- the entire structure GM down is on the hot seat. 5- we are in Dan Snyder 2.0 territory, just no HR issues.
If Daron’s contract is up next year, why get rid of him this offseason. If available on the free agency market, he would probably be the best DT available, and a team with some playmakers on defense like the lions, patriots, or Texans would probably love to have him for the short term. Daron is a good starter with great playmaking, but he’s not a game changing HOF that will fix a bad defense
I'd worry more about getting better players vs. who calls the plays.
I've seen us lose enough games with Payne. His salary represents three good players. The Patriots won four games last year. In the off-season they spent the most amount of money ever on free agency and look where they are now. With very few draft picks, we need to do the exact same thing. With this quarterback, we can make another run next year!
Well they drafted a DT in second round in 2024. If he’s not ready to take Pain spot shame on this staff. We are notorious for missing on our second round picks.
Payne's problem is effort but you can not get rid of him yet. That is what happens when you whiff on a 2nd rd DT.
Saying that they want to move off of him, would lower his potential trade value… saying he will be back, helps his trade value.
I don’t see any way they don’t at least restructure… I highly doubt they will just cut him. I still think he ends up being traded.. maybe for a player that hasn’t lived up to his draft position?? The NYJ have a bunch of cap space this offseason and also have a guy they might want to trade.. a swap of Payne and Jermaine Johnson could make sense for both teams..
The free agent class isn’t very strong at DT, so it helps Payne’s trade value
Keep Payne on an expiring contract, so that he’s playing fora new one? We saw what happened last time he was playing for a contract. Zero downside.
"The current expectation is that Payne will be back for a ninth season, though not all variables are set in stone"
Let the guy play on an expiring contract, hope for a big year. If they choose to let him walk you get up to a 3rd for compensatory pick. I don't mind this at all if that's what they're thinking!
Washington will continue to be a sorry team.
I hope Payne doesn't take a pay cut so they can trade him or cut him, it's no way he's worth the money they are paying him, you can get 2 dt for the price you are paying him and get better production!
I don't mind AP sending alot of money on any player if they are worth it!
Adam Peters is a bargain bin shopper and he drafts for potential instead of production.
1st year? This is year 3 and the defense is still the one of the worst defenses ive ever seen.
I'm also afraid they're cheap . They didn't spend the bread on improving the D line last year and banked on JD5 winning the game with the last possession .
They tried to patch holes with people like Vaughn Miller , who's OK for what he is , but didn't spend for an elite edge rusher or draft the guy from TX A&M .
100% wrong moves so far!
