The Rays’ new owners have selected Hillsborough College as their desired stadium location, but their backup plan may not be in Tampa Bay, according to Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan.
“I believe that it’s either going to be located at (Hillsborough College) or the team’s going to be in Orlando,” Hagan said on a sports radio show Wednesday. “The reality is the they have significantly more bed tax revenue than we do, and they’ve been pushing for a team.”
Hagan’s comments come a day after Hillsborough College’s board of trustees unanimously approved a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Rays for a proposal that would redevelop the college’s Dale Mabry campus to include a baseball stadium.

I don't see how all three Tampa teams are gonna be able to get a whole lot of money from the city and its taxpayers. And based on attendance of the three teams, I think that the Rays are the bottom of the pile. If the city had to make the choice of which team to lose, with the Lightning already taken care of, it's down to the Bucs or the Rays – and it isn't gonna be the Bucs. Too bad they can't put a stadium halfway between Orlando and Tampa, but the days of stadiums outside city limits is pretty much done (except for Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, which is a bit of a hike from Boston, though not far from Providence)…
The owners are ok with 2027 lockout because they’ll get expansion fees to offset lockout revenue. That doesn’t happen until Rays stadium issue is resolved. MLB will get this finally resolved in 3026
If the team did go to Orlando, you would have to think that MLB would rather prefer to have the House of Mouse (ESPN) own it.
Just take it to Orlando everyone is going to want money especially the Buccaneers, and HB county doesn’t have for everyone
Hillsborough County had better give the Rays almost all of what they want/need because I don't believe the Orlando Govt. will. The Rays will end up in Nashville or somewhere else.
Thank you, Brodie! Obviously, I know that you don't necessarily have a horse in this race. However, as a Tampa Bay sports fan, I have really appreciated you're coverage on the events unfolding with the Rays in the past months.
Makes no sense at Hillsborough College, Tampa….the cost would be tremendous, you're going to bulldoze the campus, buildings etc….and then build the stadium….not only will tax dollars be funding the demolition of the college, but the building of a new stadium, and then build a new college….UGH !!!
Seems wasteful the tampa sports authority built and renovated the baseball field leased to the yankees for spring training and football stadium leased to the bucs across the street and would now build ANOTHER baseball field next to the first field and lease itnto the rays regular season. Why not just build a roof over steinbrenner field, expand seating by another 10-15k, and lease to both tenants? You could still develop some of the HCC property for retail/hotel space to serve both bucs and baseball fans and improve the infrastructure. That could potentially be beneficial to everyone involved. Yanks could continue spring training in the same spot, now in a bigger better domed facility, then after they return to the bronx rays take it over. Rays could continue playing spring training games in Port Charlotte like normal. Why would TSA go through all this to build a baseball field next to another baseball field when each will be empty when the other is in use? Only answer is this is how the government sports scams work. In reality when governments get involved in this cryap, it just corrupts the private market and becomes a bidding war between corrupt government agencies that are hyell bent on bankrupting America.
As a person on the space coast I would love a move to Orlando. One hour drive is better than three. Orlando would have a large draw. Brevard County alone is 750k strong.
If the Rays want public money, they should sign an agreement that in return for those tax payments (same as bond payments), the Rays agree to field a competitive team, agreeing to fund salaries no lower than 10th or 12th in MLB year to year. Too many owners obtain tax funding and then refuse to compete (see White Sox)…
David Samson akaondiscueed this on his YouTube channel with the Yankees and their ballpark right next door to both Raymond James stadium and the proposed new one.
Lots of moving parts here.
The NFL team gets dibs on the money as usual. The Rays need to get out the the market with the NFL team if at all possible. There is one team in Orlando for all of the big 4 leagues. Also, the Dreamers will just give you the money for a state-of-the-art stadium for a minority share of the team. Attendance is horrible at games in St. Pete, and you can't be sure if a new stadium is going to turn that around. It's a no-brainer. Just start negotiations with Orlando now and save everyone six months.
The Rays should move to Orlando without any hesitation.
This is not The orlando Rays, this is the Tampa Bay Rays
Just a reminder that the Marlins have 2 championships to the the Rays 0 . Which, in fairness, seems absurd.
Orlando we want it
I hope that the Rays can stay in Tampa, but if they can't, I look forward to them playing at Orlando.
David Sampson on his show. Just said the Yankees are not happy about the new stadium also.
Rick Workman, who lives in Windermere, saw the writing on the wall. The Orlando Dreamers were never just a group hoping to lure a team to Orlando, they wanted to buy a team and build a stadium to go with it.
Their strategy was to enter negotiations with the Rays once every option to keep the team in the Tampa Bay area had failed. That window, however, never fully opened.
As a result, the Dreamers are now left pursuing either an expansion team or a relocation. If Workman’s Rays ownership group can’t get the HCC site in Tampa finalized, Orlando becomes the fallback. In that scenario, the Dreamers are effectively sidelined, unless they reemerge as a partner group focused on delivering the stadium plan near Universal.
The Rays and their story is tiring. My Mom had a great expression. S#@* or get off the pot!
Jacksonville Orlando New Orleans Louisville Memphis Nashville Charlotte Raleigh Virginia Beach Hartford Hamilton Mississauga Edmonton Vancouver Calgary Ottawa Montreal Sacramento Quebec City San Jose San Antonio Portland Columbus Indianapolis Winnipeg New Jersey Buffalo needs mlb
This is exhausting. Move, don't move. Wake me when they start building a stadium.
you all may not wanna hear this but Orlando should have gotten the franchise in the first place
Maybe disney should own the rays if they move to Orlando. Besides Orlando is home to disney world. Besides disney has owned the angels before. Plus they movie about them, too.
How about moving the rays to las vegas and the athletics to Orlando?
All roads lead to Orlando. Too much money and tourism
I think the location next to Raymond James Stadium is a good site, if the Rays end up moving to Orlando then put the Stadium next to Camping World Stadium similar to RJ Stadium. The Orlando TV market is similar to Tampa's
The resentment is growing with this team and the city playing cat and mouse with each other
He would say that haha.
Why Not Qrlando?
I agree with you Brodie. If the city and country are going to help the Rays build a new stadium, entertainment complex and community college buildings on the same campus as the NY Yankees spring training/minor league complex and the TB Buccaneers stadium, the Steinbrenner's and Glazer's will want to be compensated as well.
