Shopping List Season: What the Falcons Need This Offseason

On Chuck & Chernoff, hosted by Chuck Oliver and Matt Chernoff, the discussion centered on the Atlanta Falcons’ upcoming free agency period and the roster priorities the team must address during a pivotal offseason.

The hosts outlined a comprehensive list of needs, emphasizing the importance of adding a veteran backup quarterback, depth at running back, and at least two pass catchers to bolster the offense. Along the offensive line, they highlighted the need for a starting-caliber offensive tackle, while defensively, the Falcons were said to be in the market for a run-stopping interior presence, a starting linebacker, and a starting cornerback. Special teams were also part of the conversation, with the possibility of adding a kicker if upgrades are available.

Oliver and Chernoff noted that while free agency will play a major role in addressing these needs, the Falcons also have the flexibility to fill at least one key position through the draft, particularly with their second-round pick, which could be used to secure a long-term contributor.

The discussion also addressed the difficult personnel decisions facing the organization, including which current players may or may not return. Tight end Kyle Pitts was specifically mentioned as a player whose future with the team remains uncertain, underscoring the broader roster evaluation underway.

Overall, the segment emphasized that the Falcons’ success this offseason will depend on strategic roster construction, balancing free-agent signings, draft investments, and tough decisions on current personnel.

  1. They’re going to get Tyler for cheap and he’ll stay. The free agent running back market is NUTS this year. He’s not going to be as sought after as people think.

  2. The Falcons could've drafted Malik Willis instead of Desmond Ridder in the 3rd round that year. Willis was the #1 ranked QB in that draft too. Even higher than Kenny Pickett and Pickett was ranked higher than Ridder too and went in the 1st round. The fact that the Falcons never had Willis just reminds me how inept the organization has been. They passed on Willis for Desmond Ridder ????

  3. I thought the Falcons had already paid Cousins $90M? Don't they only owe him a maximum of $10M next year? In his first year they paid him $62.5M. This season they paid him $27.5M. They only owed him a total of $100M. Wasn't his cap hit $45M each of the past 2 years? Why would it be any higher than $10M this year if he doesn't stay with the team?

  4. Nobody wants to hear this but restructuring Cousins contract makes the most sense. You have so many needs that it’s asinine to take on dead cap for Cousins to turn around and have to sign a veteran QB. He’s the exact profile of player you’d want for this situation.
