Is he having a good season so far? Are you optimistic about his future with the Bulls?
Personally, I think he needs to get stronger and his teammates need to trust him more.

I’m still expecting a Nobel Prize in basketball from him one day.
I’ll give him a B. His goal of winning most improved player was way too ambitious but the potential is obviously still there. He still has a lot to learn and improve on though.
He’s been solid and has shown more frequent flashes of potential this season, but he definitely needs to get stronger and continue improving his handle if he wants to take the next step.
I also can’t stand the way Billy handles his minutes, but that’s not Matas’s fault.
B+.
he’s taken massive steps in his development and still nowhere near his full potential.
I would say a B. He needs to improve his strength and ball handling
Statistically, he has made a nice jump but was hoping for more glimpses of dominance and AS type performances. Not a lot of big individual performances imo.
I had a really good slam dunk comment for this thread. I tried to post it 3 times, but I kept fucking it up.
I really like his development this year…Billy D is not a championship NBA coach but he’s not ruining the kid at least.
Hoping we add a wing with size who defends so Matas can focus on upping his scoring average next year.
The handle and defense need to get much much better for him to approach the player that half this sub thinks he already is.
I’d give him a B.
It would be nice to see him next to a center with a pulse on defense, because Matas and Vuc at the 4 and 5 is just unplayable defensively
The good thing about P Will sucking is Matas has gotten a lot of good development minutes, he’s coming along and taking advantage of his opportunities, exactly what you’d like to see. His game has slowed down, lots of moments where last year you might expect him to try to force something to prove he can ball, this year when he gets into a bind, he’s pulling it back out and passing it off to reset the offense.
Good motor and aggression. But still young, not as strong as we’d like and learning the game at the NBA level. Hardly unusual for D to be slower to develop if you aren’t already a dawg on D when drafted. And even then, you are facing a whole new caliber of opponents to defend.
He has definitely made good progress. Probably a B grade. I compare him to Giannis I know that’s not the perfect comp for him but if he gets stronger maybe it’s a possibility. He’s progressed somewhat so far like Giannis. Giannis maybe a huge jump season 3 to 4.
Love him, maybe a B or B+ second season to me
– no majorly obvious statistical jumps in performance, which is normal in a players second year (steady progress is something I have trust in)
– no real sophomore slump either
– stays as confident as ever, shoot when he thinks it’s right, drives when he thinks it’s right
– still dropping his handle against strong defenders, but getting better with finishing drives at the rim
– defense is steadily improving, he’s improved at keeping up with rotations and isn’t doing the high school ‘stand there with your hands up like you’re being mugged’ defense as much as last year
He’s just looking like belongs in the league unlike literally every other draft pick, sans ayo, from this FO.
B-, some flashes for sure. But consistency is not there just yet. Offense at times seems to go away from him. And that’s fine, he usually isn’t the primary ball handler. But for them to do well, he really needs to be near 20+ pts.
But in terms of how the last few rookies at least last 5+ years. He’s been the best one and been given the most run. Wouldn’t say he has totally taken it by storm. But he’s definitely a building block.
Billy just doesn’t put him in situations enough to show what he can do. He starts plays the first half then goes silent. Kids not going to bloom this way.
7/10. Needs more consistency but he’s shown he can be very good. The consistency is extremely important though
Promising but needs to fix some key glaring issues
Add a little size
Get better on defense
Better handles.
Super young and all of it is fixable.
I’ve said this before but what is best case for him? I mean, I think can he be a Lauri Markkanen? Seems that’s what they want from him as he only sits at the 3 line. I know that’s by design and he’s even said they don’t want him in the mid range but still. Best case is he develops into a player we already had but fumbled?
Loving it. He has hit that 20pt mark quite a bit, he is cutting, blocking, fast breaking, and most of all keeps working on his shooting percentages finding his shot. I feel like this was his rookie season with the 2nd half of last year when they took his training wheels off and first half of this season. Hope he keeps it going. I think he can average 20pts after the all star break. He looks like he is going to grow into a star player.
Solid B. He’s now an average starter. At 21 that’s great.
Agree with others probably a B. But the thing both he and Giddey don’t seem to be making any headway with is a signature shot. To level up they need to have a spot on the floor that they can score from at a high efficiency and look for that shot by default. I’d like to see them work on a runner or elbow midrange or bank shot that they shoot 60%-plus on.
B. Improvements are there, but I feel like Billy is hanpering the development. He is treating the team like a contender.
B+
Great improvement for a sophomore considering he did play very little on his rookie season. He needs to get stronger but that’s the best problem you can have for a young player as a combination of good diet and workout program would fix that right away.
