Twins, Derek Falvey Part Ways

In a shocking and oddly-timed move, Derek Falvey is headed out the door. The Twins are reporting the move as being mutual. Jeremy Zoll will continue to be the General Manager, but will obviously be tasked with a bigger role on the baseball side. On the business side, owner Tom Pohlad will be taking over the typical team president responsibilities, at least temporarily. With little to suggest this move may be coming and few details on the decision revealed at this time, we’re mostly left to speculate. Here’s my reaction to the move and some guesses as to what may have led to this surprising change.

  1. I wouldn't give Falvey much credit for "breaking the playoff loss streak." The flip-side is that after 10 years he only has one wildcard round series win to show for it. That's not anywhere near good enough.

  2. This makes me think of Office Space. "Derek, what is it you was say you actually do around here." Everyone get ready for a new, jump to conclusions mat!

  3. Letting him run your offseason and then firing him i dont buy into the "mutual parting ways quote " it's clear he was let go is such a weird strategy should of fired him when Rocco was and let your new gm hire the coach he wants because now Shelton is on thin ice the moment there's a reason the new hm will fire him because he's not his guy

  4. I’m sure we’ll find some more details later, but I’m honestly leaning towards that something outside of baseball is going on – especially given the timing. My opinion is if he was going to quit or get fired, it would’ve happened earlier, and it almost certainly wouldn’t be framed as a “mutual decision.” All the best to him and his family.

  5. Agreed Falvey is a sympathetic figure. I think it's really hard to evaluate his tenure because of the inept ownership throughout. The more the pohlads got involved, the worse things got and the more he was hogtied. Some hits, some misses, for sure, but that's true of all GMs/POs across sports. Wishing him well moving forward.

  6. It's hard to believe any of this means very much until the Pohlads are gone. I had mixed feelings about Falvy but it was hard to know if he was good or bad because of all the restrictions the Pohlads put on him. Pohlads gone! Until then changing GMs, managers, etc. feels somewhat pointless.

  7. Derek Falvey was touted as an expert in developing pitching. He failed at that. Their only good pitching are from trades. If you consider all the prospects that regress there is plenty of reason for a change. This does not let the Pohlads off the hook. It is sad too see what has happened to the twins.

  8. Removing Falvey tells me to give Tom Pohlad a chance. I never thought I would think that. It will hinge on who the long term replacement is. Do you think Thad Levine would leave the Brewers to come back?
