Red Sox, Matt Thaiss Agree To Minor-League Deal

  1. Decent organizational depth. 30 years old, played in 60 games between the White Sox and Rays last season. Probably the first option as a stop gap if Wong or Narvaez got hurt.

  2. Wong has one option left, and I can see Thaiss stealing the backup catcher job out of camp. He’s got some pop, and he’s not bad behind the plate, other than having a weak arm.

I’d still like to see them bring in Jonah Heim, and just move on entirely from Wong. I’m sure Heim’s holding out for a starting gig, though.

  3. Matt Thiass has a spot on my funny name baseball list. I’d love to find more players whose first and last name can be smashed together to make one normal name.

  4. Left handed catcher, career 652 OPS and 81 OPS+, 2 bWAR and 23 HR over 7 years. Exactly the middle infield righty power bat we needed!
