[Cundall] The Hicks deal gives you an idea of the challenges of moving Yoshida. It cost David Sandlin to save $16 million over two years. That’s less than one year of Yoshida’s contract.

  1. It’s marginal but Hicks looks like he’s done, a true case of taking on someone who is cooked to get a prospect. Yoshida might provide *something* as a hitter and close *some* of that salary gap. His inability to play the field is the killer though, value wise.

But this is the answer whenever anyone says “Why does everyone want to trade Duran??” Because there’s a logjam and solving the logjam by trading Yoshida would include paying part of his salary and giving up a prospect for nothing in return *and then* making a move for an infielder. Where as Duran has real value, trading him could solve the logjam and solve the IF issues without giving up a prospect.

  2. Personally I think Yoshida could still have some value on the club. He was one of the best hitters in baseball for parts of his rookie year and has been battling injuries. If he can be fully healthy he should be able to give you .280, 15-20 hr.

  3. If I’m a GM or POBO of another team and the Red Sox call me up asking if we’re interested in Yoshida, my immediate response is “you’re paying at least 75% of his remaining salary or I’m hanging up.”

  4. Yoshida is a legitimately good hitter and playable as an everyday player for a team that doesn’t have a glut of talent. I realize that it’s pretty much required that he play DH only, but his hitting towards the end of the year last year looks sustainable and, frankly, effortless.

I get that he doesn’t have much value on the open market, but Hicks was essentially dead money. Yoshida is overpaid, but decent and consistent – assuming he’s past his injury issues

  5. You’re only trading Yoshida to free up a roster spot or for salary relief. Right now they don’t need the roster spot, and if it took the #9 prospect to get 16M of salary relief on Hicks, it’s going to hurt a lot to get out from under Yoshida.

If they move him, they’re paying freight in either money or an Arias/Witherspoon level prospect

  6. Hicks is it easier to trade than masa too. Even at equal salaries. Teams think they can fix hicks. No chance they think that about Masa.

  7. If you could have DFAed Hicks, or Yoshida (same argument) and not had it hit your payroll bonus then that’s what they would have done. DFAing either player clears up a roster spot (a benefit) but doesn’t impact their willingness to add more to payroll.

The Sox literally just did what everyone has begged them to do. Move pitching depth to better the roster. Hicks and Sandlin are unnecessary players for this club short and long term. They got rid of Hicks’ salary that now theoretically allows them to eat some of Masa’s when they try to move him next.

  8. Been pretty obvious that they would have loved to offload Yoshida since Breslow came aboard. It’s impossible unless they’re cutting an insignificant amount of his salary.

He’s basically a less horrible, but more expensive Rusney Castillo. The good news is that Yoshida does have the potential to be a league average DH, even if overpaid.

They should have just signed Contreras from the jump. Keith Law wrote that at the time of both signings, and clearly we know now that was the truth.

  9. Yoshida has more value than Hicks… Masa may be a 1 trick pony, which sure beats a guy throwing 100+ mph with no idea where it’s going…

Crazy because Sandlin is actually decent…

    Ugh…

  10. Thats why I’ve been saying- the Red Sox have the money to just eat the mistake, and should just cut him outright.

  11. True. But then there’s the fact that Yoshida is much better than Hicks. Yoshida has way more value. Not denying that he’s an awkward fit on our roster and that ideally we would like to move him. But he’s still a good hitter who can lead the team when he gets on a streak. Hicks really doesn’t have any value to speak of.

  12. Can we not trade Yoshida to the Marlins or Pirates? They need to make it look like they’re trying to spend payroll. Take a bag of bazooka Joe in return.
