Eugenio Suarez SIGNS With The Reds – The Red Sox, Mariners & Pirates All Miss Out

The Reds have signed Eugenio Suarez & maybe just as or more importantly, the Red Sox, Mariners and Pirates DON’T.

  1. Rumor has it Pirates offered or were willing to go 2 years and/or more dollars.

That said, it probably came down to:
Ballpark fit – he’ll hit more dingers in Cincy than Pittsburgh. Then there’s the fact that Suarez played there before. And also, guys just don’t want to play in Pittsburgh in general – even for more – which comes down to previous poor management decisions.
This off-season the Pirates have been sufficiently aggressive, but they are paying for all their 6 years of a lack of commitment to winning.
    Very frustrating as a fan!!
Now they have to trade some pitchers they can’t afford to lose to get the third base bat they desperately need.
Can they pull it off by Spring Training? I am very doubtful.

  2. According to Jason Mackey on Twitter. Was told Pirates offered same AAV on Eugenio Suarez ($15 million) were willing to go higher, as well as add another year.

Sounds like his choice came down to a better ballpark fit, familiarity and a chance to cash in next year with a big season.

Interesting use of wording here…”offered same, we’re willing to go higher” seems like it should have been offered higher, we’re willing to go more. Either way, a tough break for Pittsburgh.

  3. As a Red Sox fan I'm glad he signed elsewhere. The home runs would have been good but he strikes out a ton and can't play defense. They will find someone else 🤞⚾

  4. Boston fan here: I am VERY happy he went elsewhere. Boston already strikes out too much and, more importantly, has ignored infield defense for far too long. Suarez makes both those situations worse. Yes, they still need an infielder, but that guy needs to be someone who can field his position well.

  5. I am happy Suarez did not sign with the Sox. Your take on the Sox is off yet again. I would rather go with Sox internal options than Suarez. Yes, he gives home runs. That is it. We do not need the strike outs, and the defense is atrocious.

  6. I'm lost on this one. Where does Suarez play for the Red Sox? He's a lousy fielder and they have a lot of ground ball pitchers. So at best he's a DH. But they already have one DH-only player in Yoshida. Is one of these two going to sit and waste a valuable roster spot? Besides Suarez isn't that great a DH. 49 homers and only an 830-ish OPS tells you something. Low average, low on–base, outside of the HRs he doesn't even put the ball in play much.

  7. I wouldn't say the Mariners missed out that much given how he performed for the Mariners last year. He was a much different hitter than when he was with Arizona

  8. The signing is the money that was left over when Schwaeber stayed with Philly. They were basically pressured into doing this pickup when Elly turned down all that money last month and will be a free agent next year. They have to have a "Face of the franchise" player next year and by then Hunter Greene will be gone too. For this year, at least, its a good move for a WC spot if pitching stays like last year

  9. We keep hearing about Eugenio Suarez for the Pirates. He got a $15 million dollar deal to go to the Reds with it being unlikely he is there for a second year. Why shouldn't the Pirates just give Konnor Griffin a shot and see what he will do? He's considered a top prospect and won't cost $15 million dollars a year. Having Suarez on the team will probably just cause the Pirates to manipulate Konnor Griffin's time. It makes more sense and the Pirates have a lot of young guys on their roster, it should be a good fit. Let Suarez play for the Reds and whoever else he ends up with after that. Let's see what Griffin can do.

  10. im happy for the reds didn't want redsox to get him also reds have Francona for three year contract who knows if he has an extension but he has two more years left !!!

  11. He's gonna have a nice year in Cincy. He can get 20 or so bombs in that launching pad of a ballpark and convince a contender to trade for him at the deadline or stay of Cincy is in it. They will be if Elly comes back strong.

  12. I dont care what anyone says something is going on in baseball it reeks of market collusion or something, i think owners wanna reset the market, what's up with the red sox he would mash 55 homers in that tiny park as a righthanded hitter they couldn't have come to the table with 2 years $40 mil?

  13. Sox fan here. I’m good with Suarez. Would’ve only liked him if he was going to mostly dh, but the current roster is not particularly well suited for his addition. Still prefer a solid defender who can play 2b/3b here
