Paul Maurice, Panthers Postgame: Florida Drops Fourth Straight, Loses Big One to Buffalo Sabres
Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice meets the media after his team lost 5-3 to the visiting Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 2, 2026.
The Panthers, who have lost four straight, are now nine points back of Boston for the final wild card spot and 10 back of the Sabres who hold the first wild card position.
The Panthers led 2-0 on goals from Sandis Vilmanis and Evan Rodrigues, and trailed 3-2 before Uvis Balinskis tied it late in the second.
Buffalo scored twice in the third — with Florida failing to score on a 5-on-3 power play.
Alex Lyon made 38 saves in the win for the Sabres; Sergei Bobrovsky made 15 in the loss.
Florida plays host to Boston on Wednesday and visits Tampa Bay on Thursday before the Olympic break.

Shut the team down, rest up in post, come back full next year. That’s the best course of action. We knew we weren’t making playoffs in week 3. It just happened to get worse. It’s not our year. We have to lead the league in hitting the goalie in the chest on every shot. Whereas every other team seems to hit the open corners when they get a good look. Sharp shooters don’t seem very sharp this year. On breakaways I never feel like we have a chance to score, whereas the other team seems to score almost every time. It’s just frustrating how ineffective our shooting is in terms of turning them into goals. Look at how many shots we have versus goals scored, and then look at what the other teams percentage of goals versus shots are. That seems to be a common thing all year for us.
Got a team that's working so hard and is still playing so great in my opinion. A couple of errors here or there, but we have a goaltender that just is not playing up to his standards when we need those big stops, he just doesn't get them. I think we should be playing Tarasov a little more then Bob at this point.

Not making the playoffs this year, way too many injuries. But that's okay, the last two years' success has been amazing to witness. They'll come back again next year, stronger than ever!

As a Sabres fan living in SW Florida, I thought the Panthers brought it most of the night! They got LYON'd last night! Lotsa miles on that Panthers team!
Its ok. The Lightning will represent Florida in the playoffs. Get your golf clubs out. You still have a great team. Injured suck. Tampa has a little deeper team to navigate the injuries. Point, Cirelli are out, and we just got Hedman back.
Kuch has kept Tampa on top almost by himself. Vasy too.
There are no real fans there. Their arena will be virtually empty for the rest of the season. Go to Montreal, Edmonton, or Toronto if you want to see what a real NHL fan base looks like. 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Die hard Rangers fan here. I really wanted to see you guys compete and try to make it 3 cups this year. It would have been a hell of a story. At least its not happening because of an unfortunate injury plague though. The future is still bright for you guys. Next year you'll be straight back into the mix for another possible cup run. A healthy team and no condensed Olympic schedule is all you'll need.
