[Smith] The Celtics will bring Nikola Vucevic in via the Kristaps Porzingis TPE, a league source told @spotrac.com. This will create a $27,678,571 TPE for Anfernee Simons that will be good for one year from the day the trade is officially completed.

  1. That’s incredible and I didn’t even realize you could do that.

Seems like a weird ass loophole.

You’d think if you traded Simons (27.6 mil) for Vucevic (21.4 mil) it would just create a 6.2 mil trade exception.

But they are saying we used the 22.5 mil Zingis TPE to absorb Vucevic’s salary and then it created this new larger 27.6 mil TPE we have a year to use. I’m not fully getting how that works from the Bulls side. Was it simply because they sent out 21.4 mil in salary they could take back 27.6 mil contract?

  2. Maintains flexibility this offseason. If we don’t re-sign Vuc, we have the option to either use the full MLE or acquire a player via trade without going deep into the tax. But if the goal is to stay out of the tax aprons, then there’s not much difference between the $22.5M TPE we already had and this new $27.7M one. Essentially just extends the life of a big TPE.

  3. I think this is the best part of the trade.

But now we probably need to get another guard, that or maybe give an opportunity to Ron Harper.

  4. Ok I am back on board with liking this trade (even though I still don’t think Vuc is a long term answer)

The biggest downside to not trading Simons would always have been that you lose his contract for making a trade next year (either by letting him walk or hypothetically you re-sign him for a cheaper deal) in order to bring in another good player to put us over the top.

This deal means we keep that “contract” for trades for a whole extra year without it showing on our cap sheet. Which means we can either let vuc walk or re-sign him for cheap without taking the hit on trade flexibility.

  5. Brad is all about options. And when something makes sense he doesn’t hesitate to use assets to capitalize on it. We have a lot of options now with a 27m tpe. Let’s say the wolves are all in on giannis but they lack picks. We could give them 2 frps and get back McDaniels who’s making 25m and we wouldn’t have had that option before.

New york you need picks? Well here’s 2 frps and we’re happy to take Bridges off your hands!

Golden state you need to get rid of Draymond? Sure here’s the 2nd round pick we got from the Bulls. Guess that solves our PF problem and we got someone to hide Vuc on defense.

What’s amusing about all of this is that if we used the tpe, Brad would’ve effectively traded Simons for Vuc AND whoever we slot into the TPE.

    In. Brad. We. Trust.

  6. You know who the only player in the league who makes exactly $27,678,571 next year? *Draymond Green*.

  7. How tf do you guys know this much about trade details? This shit is confusing coming from a new fan

  8. Wheeeeee!!!!! Private equity ownership strikes!

They were NEVER adding pieces….Tatum is not coming back….the team is demonstrably worse. Who needs Simmons?!? Dude only balled his ass off for us….screw that guy.

BUT…the private equity owners saved like 30 million! Whooo hoo let’s fucking go! Celt’s were only a 40 YO soft center who only plays the wing but couldnt hit water from a boat away from the finals! Go green!

    Fuck this ownership.

Edit: Poof! Just like that! This incredible season is over…and I’m being downvoted by people pining for the offseason. That’s the definition of SOFT TAKE. Oh…it’s a given we’ll be here again? Okay, USA.

  9. A TPE is only a TPE until you do something with it. Remember how the Hayward TPE just wound up being Evan Fournier? This means nothing as of right now.
