The Good and Bad of the Recent Colorado Avalanche Struggles
Colorado Avalanche stumble during tough stretch—will adversity fuel a deeper playoff run or spark early trade moves?
Chris Micieli and Zach Pearson break down the highs and lows of the Avalanche’s recent slump, spotlighting how Gabriel Landeskog’s injury, a faltering power play, and creeping self-doubt threaten home-ice advantage in the NHL playoffs. The conversation examines whether the pressure could push GM Chris MacFarland into early trade decisions—possibly before the Olympic roster freeze—and weighs the psychological impact of losing streaks on fan expectations and locker room confidence.
Key talking points include the surging rivals Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars, timing trade deadline moves to optimize the Avs’ postseason prospects, and the critical role of returning players like Logan O’Connor and Devon Toews. Can the Avalanche recapture their identity and championship edge, or will recent struggles expose them in the playoff grind? Don’t miss sharp insights on the franchise’s path forward.

Need to make a point. This powerplay has very weird struggle with this talent pool in avs. Dallas PP has been quite well all season. Sure this is psychological this point, but how much Rantanen did make a difference avs powerplay If you compare these teams PP?
Ofcourse this is 5 player problem not just one. But earlier Mac did not need to skate all over the place previous years.
Its crazy how vital Landeskog is for this team. He really does so many things great. He sets the tone and just keeps everyone on the same page. We will come out of the Olympic break on fire. No need to worry.
They are looking very vulnerable right now and hardly Stanley cup contenders. Mackinnon seems to slow down every year for the last 20ish games but he's really slowed down a lot earlier this year. Probably finish 3rd in scoring …4th is he's not careful, and makar seems a bit off as well. The Olympics aren't going to help at all.
I know that no professional team is trying to lose games, but I wonder how much the games not meaning much impacts this. They rushed out, built a big lead, and then when the injuries started they seemed to coast a bit more. The PP has been garbage all year though, and just being average there would solve most of the losses. I have no answers as to why they struggle so much there. The zone entry isnt working well, so they dont seem to set up well and then flounder. Seems teams are ready to defend the Avs on the drop zone entry, but you watch other teams and they enter the zone effortlessly most of the time. I know the avs are a rush team, but they should be able to enter a zone without a rush
In the last 10 games, the Avs have lost 7 points to the Wild and 4 to the Stars.
Can’t have much more without, at best, having to scrap down to game 82 to secure home ice.
