He seemed like he had the faith and the respect of the team and staff. This is a good hire for both parties.
Is he the new equipment manager?
That’s him reuniting with Mike McCarthy who I’m thinking couldn’t land anyone else.

Do we play them next season?
He’ll probably do well as an Asst/coordinator. He just didn’t have what it took to be the one calling plays. Maybe further down the line but not at the present time.
Steelers are used to having a GOOD defense, they will see through Joe Whitt Jr faster than you can say āRumpelstiltskin!ā
He will do great things going forward and our toxic fanbase will wonder why he was ass here. When in fact he wasnāt ass, itās the lack of talents thatās ass š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£. Congratulations Joe šš¾šš¾šš¾šš¾
Iām not sure he will ever get a shot at coordinating a defense and calling plays ever again. He was so bad at preparing the players, coordinating the defense, and calling the defense on game day, that itās almost impossible to truly judge the talent levels of guys like Sainstrill, Luvu, Maggee, Amos, and Newton, Iād like to say Quan as well but he has looked the worse of the bunch. Payne and Kinlaw are serviceable, but these are really the only 2 that we can fairly grade because the DTs are the only position group that Witt couldnāt scheme into the worst situations possible.
A within 2 years under Witt, both Mikey and Luvu went from budding superstars to bums. Wags went from a player on the decline but still serviceable to being consistently picked on and made to look borderline unplayable on passing downs. Just about everyone, old and young regressed under Witt, players that were sent packing before the start of the season, joined other teams and their play improved.
WRs, TEs and WRs were running wide open every game. Before DQ took over play calling, it had got to the point where the only way we made a stop was because of an unforced error. Witt was in way over his head in every single aspect of his job both seasons, the first was masked because of our historically great 4th offense.
A lot of guys think our issue was just as much on the talent level as it was Joe Witt. It wasnāt, when the person who is coordinating and calling the defense is incompetent and unable to do the job at probably a G5 level, itāll be impossible for guys to perform their best. Iām not even sure Witt could coordinate and call a success FBS defense, heās at a FCS level.
People our going to be pleasantly surprised next season at the vast improvement of our defense, even if we donāt add to many peices. People forget how drastically our defense improved when Ron took over for JDR and started running the most vanilla defense in the NFL. Witt had our players so confused, that almost every play our LBs and DBs were ācommunicatingā with each other even after the snap of the ball. Over half of the time we had at minimum 2 guys at either LB or DB not knowing what the hell was going on, then the other 50% of the time we had one guy who though he knew exactly what was going on, changed what everyone thought was going on to what he thought was going on, but only maybe half of the guys got the message. Thats how we ended up with 1 guy being double or trippled with guys running wide open.
Joe Witt was so bad that he wasnāt even able to dumb down the defense to get players to stop overthinking and to react instead. Ā When Witt tried to make the defense an easier defense to understand and just play in, it made it even worse because our guys still had no clue as to what was going on but now they were also running very vanilla zone and man schemes.
In my opinion, many are underselling just how awful Witt was. There was nothing he could lean on, he wasnāt some mastermind, heās not a good communicator, he couldnāt pump up the guys with a RA RA speech because he was up in the both. He couldnāt make adjustments during the week let alone in game. The scheme was already trash against the Shanny/McVay offensive system before DQ and Witt were hired. It was almost like the opposing team knew what defense we were running on 80% of the plays or more. When the person coordinating and calling the defense is a net negative in just about every single aspect of his job, title be impossible for his unit to succeed.

It would laugh, but it doesn’t move the needle after hiring McCarthy.
After firing Tomlin and hiring McCarthy, I feel like the Steelers are finally trying to tank for a QB this year.
Edit: okay lawyers, after *mutually parting ways* with Tomlin (like we did with Kliff).

Good for Joe. I wish him the best.
#Tank4Archie is in full motion šš¤£
Before Kliff Kingsbury got hired š¤£
