That's that. No point discussing it anymore because it's done.

He made the comments on 96.9 The Game. The interview is now available here: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-game-on-with-bianchi-krav-30599435/episode/jeff-weltman-321249722.

Weltman shared his perspective on how the season has gone. It shouldn't be a surprise, but he thinks the games where we played well early in the season were our real team. And we've just faced adversity in the form of injuries, shooting struggles, etc. that are not indicative of our actual capabilities.

A few quotes from Weltman's subsequent meeting with reporters after the radio interview:

  • “Jamahl Mosley will be our coach for the rest of the season.” – Note, he sounded firm here – whereas on the radio interview beforehand, he sounded shocked to even be asked the question.
  • “When this team has been healthy it’s been really good.”
  • “We feel the weight of our fan’s frustration.”
  • “I don’t like the state of the team right now.”
  • "I'm frustrated. I think we have great potential but so far we haven't been able to demonstrate it."
  • “For 4 1/2 years we’ve played really hard. That’s been our brand. We’re sideways right now. It’s on everybody to recapture that.”
  • On Banchero/Wagner/Suggs not being able to stay healthy together: “It’s concerning.”

  1. Well I guess we can call it wraps on this season. Hopefully we can get into the playoffs and get some more experience for our guys but we won’t be making much noise.

  2. I shouldn’t have listened to that, I’m so rattled.

The entire thing was just full of bad excuses, cherry picking stats, and giving wishy washy answers.

I mean he literally fucking blamed our bad shooting on our defence. Unbelievable.

We cannot renew this guy’s contract, please don’t do it.

    *EDIT: [Youtube link of interview](https://youtu.be/P25Ag3sZyNw?t=3658)*

  3. His answer on Mose was fucking concerning. He seemed shocked that it should even be questioned if Moses finishes out the year.

  4. At some level, what is Weltman supposed to say, yeah I messed up big time, the team is screwed and it is all my fault.

Those sorts of conversations occur behind closed doors, not in public, he gave vanilla answers which is exactly what I expected him to say. He essentially said, rah rah team, we had some setbacks, but onward.

Now, none of that speaks to the job he is doing, which at least on the surface doesn’t seem great, if the DeVos family fired him, I do not think many of the fans would be upset.

  5. Hell yeah. If we get everyone back and everyone stays healthy forever, we should be able to push an actual contender to 6 games in the playoffs then have the same season next year.

  6. To be fair, he’s not committing to anything otherwise on Mosely because if he goes, Weltman does too. An indictment on Jamahl is an indictment on himself

  7. The games we played well in early were when Paolo was out… am I wrong? Seemed like our best stretch of the season, W/L wise at least

(Really not trying to start anything, just an observation based on Weltman’s comments)

  8. I mean, whats he gonna say?

Even if they are not satisfied, they are not going to publicly evaluate Mosley negatively at this point if they are planing to keep him till the end of the season.

Publicly you have to support the coach while he is still the coach. Internally however you have to evaluate, give honest feedback, and plan on change.

  9. We’ve had shooting issues every year he’s been here.

We’ve had dozens of different players and multiple coaches since 2017, the one constant has been Weltman…..

How is this not the Skinner meme at this point???

  10. How does he square the fact that our defense has gotten so much worse with relatively the same team?

I think it’s because we have decided to play so much faster with a team full of large guys. When we played slow, yeah it was ugly, but we were better.

  11. When we play well, that’s our real team. But when we lose and lose bad that’s just fake! /s

  12. I wish he was more critical but let’s be real. Very rarely is a GM who hired the coach going to publicly call them out across the media. Front office will more than likely do something in the offseason. A bunch of media speak, move on folks.

  13. Alright, see yall next year. Hard to watch a team where the players look like they checked out, coaches that looks like they have no idea what they’re doing, and a front office that’s clueless and out of touch and scared of making any moves.

  14. Yeah I’m done for the rest of the season then since you wanna hold on to this “dumbass” HC smfh…

  15. I never understood why anyone would think he would be fired this year, that was never going to happen. I also think he has a better than 50-50 chance he returns next year, if the team finishes strong(ish) he will return. If he is fired there will be other roster moves and one of the big four will be involved (and it won’t be Franz or Bane). The team is capped out, Black needs to be paid, and the team has proven it can win without one specific part of its “core” and struggles without another specific piece. I let you guys guess who….

  16. I’m old enough to remember when Q96 used to be modern rock. Then switched to classic rock in ’91. Moved away 20 years ago, no idea what the format is now

  17. This organization is so unserious, I can’t wait for them to cut salary again next year and try their hardest to get under the cap

  18. The problem with the team is weltmans vision. He wants a team of 6”10” guys that can play defense and all play make. He’s delusional. It’s not working and it’s not going to. Sound like an Amazing idea but it’s almost impossible to do. Weltman will not change his mind.

  19. Good snippets, thanks! If nothing else, at least the fan pressure has gotten big enough to force him to respond to it, and it sounds like he’s done that pretty directly.

So we’re sticking with Mose, everyone knows it now, including the players, and we shall see how things play out for us over the rest of the year.

Personally, I think there is zero chance of a championship with this particular team and coach combo, even if Franz returns soon and there are no other injuries for the rest of the year. So all I can really be excited for is to see if we make the playoffs and manage to win the first round.

I think it’s far more likely we just keep skidding thru the end of the year with this same pattern of inconsistency and mediocrity, though.

  20. If Mose is not fired at the end of the season Weltman should be following him right back. I get not firing him during the season, as it is already wasted, but next year we gotta do something about coaching.

  21. Am I crazy for remembering the start of the season when we were healthy? We were pretty fuckin good. Be nice to see that again, I think we could compete with a healthy squad

Not sure why anyone expected full transparency here. This is standard PR from a GM. You don’t have to like it, but it’s not surprising.
