TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Supporters of the Bayview Retiree Golf Course in Toledo are facing a property takeover without a scheduled meeting with engineers and what appears to be a firm acquisition date.
The situation could be headed to court and that’s why, in part, the city of Toledo is putting the brakes on some access. Two memos sent from the city to those supporters show the city has listened to the supporters, but admits they probably won’t like the answers.
You can read the memos at the end of this story.
Under all the winter snow is the Bayview course along Summit Street. Its flat layout makes it easier for older golfers to navigate, but when spring hits, golfers may not be out there.
A memo from the city now gives Feb. 10 as the firm date for when the city will take possession. As the city makes repairs and expands the Bayview Wastewater Treatment Plant, city leaders say they’ll need the golf course property to store material. The city owns the land for the course and leases it out for golf.
Supporters have suggested putting the material across the street at an empty Detwiler parking lot.
In a letter, the city says that the idea “introduces safety risks, potential cost increases, and logistical challenges.”
The city also says it cannot change the size of the staging area and cannot move it.
Supporters have also asked to meet with the engineering consultant to understand the needs and where things could go. That won’t happen.
A memo from the city’s law director says: “Your email on February 2nd 2026, makes it clear that you have moved to a litigation posture, therefore our offer for you to meet with the city’s outside engineering consultants is withdrawn.”
Barring legal challenges, fencing may soon go up around that property for the work to begin.
“City officials have made these difficult decisions with an eye toward the future and for the benefit of all Toledoans,” the law director said in his memo.
In one of the memos, those city leaders say if they were to have built the plan in these times, they would not have located on that piece of property so close to natural habitats and recreation.
