5 Points ahead and games in hand is bigger than it looks. I remember the Avs last season trying to chase last second to even pick up 6-8 points to try to get second in the Central vs Dallas and just couldnt catch them. What a lead means is that the Avs can play .500 hockey and keep their standing the same. Meanwhile the teams chasing have to consistently play winning hockey to even try to tie the Avs in points. If they lose even 2 or 3 in a row it screws the (the teams chasing) like AJ said at 41:20.
Also, the Avs play the Wild the second game back from the Olympics
