Mike Florio talks NFL’s failure to award draft compensation to Bears for Ian Cunningham’s promotion

On the Rahimi, Harris & Grote Show, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk discussed Bears fans’ continued frustration with the NFL failing to award Chicago a pair of compensatory draft picks for assistant general manager Ian Cunningham leaving to become the new Atlanta Falcons general manager. Under the Rooney Rule, teams receive draft compensation when a minority candidate of theirs like Cunningham gets a promotion to a general manager role. But in the NFL’s eyes, Cunningham isn’t the top decision-maker in Atlanta, so no draft compensation has been awarded.

  1. The interesting thing is that Atlanta is not motivated to see the Bears get 2 comp picks, in fact they would prefer the Bears not receive picks as they are potential NFC playoff rivals in the near future. The rules are subject to manipulation by the hiring team and in this case the Falcons got the executive they wanted while their potential future playoff rival didn't get the picks. I think it would make more sense if both teams received 1 round 3 pick so the hiring team is also motivated to make the hire and give the proper level of responsibility.

  2. Can someone tell me which head coach hired this offseason shouldn’t have been hired? NFL teams are not choosing candidates based on color because that’s fucking dumb 😂 you chose who you believe is the best person for the job based on experience, how they interview, their plans, and the staff they’ll hire. Color would be the bottom of the list for things I’m worried about for hiring. If he’s black white orange purple doesn’t matter as long as I believe he’s a good coach

  3. The NFL is going to get tarred with the optics of this if they don't act. Effectively they are saying the 'minority' hire, Cunningham, has the experience, will do most of the work and make the key decisions, whilst the 'white guy' Ryan, will get the credit. Now whilst we know this isn't quite the nuance of the situation, anyone who really wants to kick up a fuss can very easily paint it this way!

  4. It won't be a good one, but I'd just like to hear the explanation.
We've seen teams get the picks when the GM promoted does not have final say of the 53.
What decision(s), exactly, does Matt Ryan make that warrants the decision not to give the picks?

  5. Only the NFL could write a rule so full of ambiguity that it's open to interpretation that a situation like this can occur. This incompetence runs throughout league operations. You only have to see the rulebook for the actual game to know that, from defining what constitutes a catch to what calls can be challenged and when reviews are automatic. It's farcical.

  6. The Rooney Rule was introduced to try to address an imbalance in hiring practices, but I've never seen it stated what the ultimate goals are. Is it when the number of minority head coaches and executives reflects the demographic or the country (about 30%), when the number reflects the NFL player demographic (about 70%), or somewhere in between? There must be a target number, allowing for annual variance above or below over a given timeframe, or how will the league measure progress and assess the effectiveness of the rules, and how will it know when the issue no longer exists and the rule is no longer needed?

  7. Reality is the Rooney rule itself is racist , your putting people ahead of others purely based on their race , that’s the definition of discrimination itself , kinda ironic isn’t it

  8. I guess all the people who scream for reparations saying the US is racist have some evidence. The NFL lacks integrity. I don’t care about the Rooney rule, but if you’re going to implement the rule to cover over your racism and then renig on your own rule, you actually look more racist.

  9. And the Bears have a ton of awesome black coaches who the city love and adore. We don’t want to lose them. Ian is a boss and the Bears were hiring these coaches because Ben and Ryan believe in their leadership and football knowledge.
