Celtics’ win proved exactly why Nikola Vucevic was the true winner in the trade

  1. This is from another comment in another discussion but here is why this is a great trade:

    [https://np.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/1qy8fty/all_the_possessions_in_the_last_3_minutes_of_the/](https://np.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/1qy8fty/all_the_possessions_in_the_last_3_minutes_of_the/

At the jump ball, Mazulla subs Vucevic in. At 1.45 game mark JB gets the ball, Vucevic set the screen forcing a switch, Jaylen drives to be met by two Heat defenders while Vucevic pops out instantly, JB kicks it out to him. Now, out of that play we got DWhite open in the corner and a passer he is, Vucevic instantly assists him from the three point line with total of 3 defenders on him and JB out of that screen play. DWhite has the best look he can have.

At 1.15 JB again gets the ball, Vucevic sets a screen, Bam switches on JB and Vucevic burries his mismatched defender deep in the paint while JB taking Bam all the way out. Now all the other Heat defenders are on their shooters out. JB throws a entry pass to Vucevic, but (confusing him with KP I guess lol) he throws it too high and fast. It should be an easier pass actually and if it was connected, it most probably would be the seal on that mismatch. And I am not even highlighting how much this very same in and out game opened up a lot for Pritchard in the third. I am guessing all of them including DWhite will get better at using this real quick.

This is why we always need this type of big with the roster construction we have.

Queta, Garza and Vucevic is of course a downgrade from KP, Al and Kornet. None of them individiually are as complete as the old crew. But we can still produce similar effects like Queta’s defense and screens, Vucevic’s in and out game, outlet effect, etc. And considering KP’s absence all the time, Al’s slowing down this year with his age, the downgrade is not insane at all. And if Vucevic pans out and signs for let’s say 10M for next year, all three contracts in total will be almost equal to Kornet’s contract this year giving us a lot of flexibility. This is insane level of asset management.

  2. I didn’t watch the second half but I saw him get absolutely roasted on defense about 5 times in the first.
