Tom Wilson is rooming with a Canadian goaltender at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, but it’s not his “best bud” and Washington Capitals teammate Logan Thompson.

Instead, according to the Daily Hive Vancouver’s Rob Williams, Wilson will be bunking with a former Capitals netminder, Darcy Kuemper.

I’m working the athlete’s village Team Canada roommate beat here in Milan.

I’m aware of these pairs so far:
Horvat-Sanheim
Celebrini-Theodore
Wilson-Kuemper

“I have a roommate, yeah, Darcy Kuemper,” Wilson told TSN after Sunday’s practice. “We’re spending the night in the village tonight. It’s really fun. We walked by one of the Canadian lounges, and all the speed skaters were in there watching one of their buddies compete, and you learn a lot about where everyone came from, who they’re cheering on, and what their sport entails.

“It’s gotta be one of the best things about the Olympics, being not only a hockey team, but a team as a country and pulling for every single person that walks into that Canadian dorm and village together. It’s fun. The women are off to a good start, saw a few of them, and it’s just going to be an awesome couple weeks, hanging with Marchy and all the boys. They keep you on your toes.”

Wilson and Kuemper were teammates for two seasons in DC with the Capitals from 2022-2024, before Kuemper was dealt west to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois. After a rough end to his stint with the Caps, Kuemper has revived his career in LA, finishing third in Vezina Trophy voting last season.

In 36 games for the Kings this year, Kuemper is 14-11-9 with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. The 35-year-old backstop is expected to be Canada’s third goalie, behind Thompson and Jordan Binnington on the depth chart.

Wilson, originally expected to play a checking-line role for the gold-medal favorites, lined up on the team’s top line with Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini at their first practice in Italy. The Capitals’ alternate captain and leading scorer has 49 points (23g, 26a) in 50 games this season.

All the Canadian players arrived in Italy on Sunday morning. They won’t take the ice for game action until they face Czechia on February 12.
