  1. As a lifelong Leafs fan, I’ve been witness to such legendary Leaf Captains such as Sittler, Vaive, Clark, Gilmour, Sundin, Phaneuf (ok, I added that one as an LOL), and finally JT. I have vague recollections of Keon but I was only 5 or 6 then so not enough to pass judgement on his leadership qualities 😊

    As of this date, Matthews isn’t anywhere nearly as deserving of the role as any of these fine players, men and role models. AM is more concerned with his hair, clothes and image AWAY from the ice than anything pertaining to leading this Leafs team into battle. When the game or even the season is on the line and chaos is all around him, he quietly sits on the bench between shifts and reaches for the ipad to check out his ‘plays’ on the last shift. Who has time to coach, correct, mentor and teach his fellow teammates in the heat of battle when you have so many of your own plays to review?

    As an uber-patriotic Canadian and a diehard hockey fan, I approve of the USA Hockey decision to appoint Matthews as captain 👍🏼

    Wonder if he'll leave McDavid WIDE open in OT like he did at the 4 Nations??

  10. I think a big part of it is, you need one of IF not your best player playing at his absolute best, if he doesn’t get the C after having it, that takes a hit on his confidence. If he is playing his best hockey we will win. Say what you want you can’t argue the fact we need him absolutely buzzing this tourney!

I am honestly surprised they gave it to him because of the fact that you got sullivan as the head coach who would instantly vouch for one of miller or trochek to get it or because quinn hughes and brock faber are both on the team and bill guerin is the gm he didn't give it to one of them. My only hope is that larkin gets one of the letters because after 4 nations lots of players on team usa spoke up about how great of a guy he was and a great leader he was on the team.

  21. What a horrid choice for captaincy 😂should have been slavin, Larkin, qHughes, mcavoy, or Mathew tkachuck . Matthews may have been one of the bottom 5 worse players to choose for the captaincy on team USA😭

  29. 34 isnt even the best player or the best leader on the leafs so I don’t know how he earned captain for Toronto or USA. A sad insight into the tone being set for the Olympics already honestly.
