We've lost Tony Jones and Andy Larsen now during the tank

The Jazz had their most eventful week in years last week, signaling a new era for the franchise. I’m honestly extremely excited about it.

However, it’s going to be a new era for me too.

This is my last week as the Jazz beat writer for The Salt Lake Tribune. I’m going to be moving into a full-time role here, writing data columns.

  1. It’s a bit of a bummer but I’m looking forward to seeing what he gets up to with the Trib full time.

  2. I like Sarah Todd of the des News and Ben Anderson of KSL (although the latter is an out and out homer). Hoping the trib brings in another person who can do the work Andy did.

  3. Man our writer scene is looking a little bleak now. We had it good with Andy and Tony Jones for a while. I don’t mind Sarah Todd’s writing, but it does usually feel a little more surface level. I like Ben Anderson too. And not like Andy had an amazing track record of knowing what the FO was thinking, but now it really feels like none of the reporters have a great inside connection. Tony Jones is still our best reporter when it comes to that

  4. Bummer. We are losing a lot. There will be times during games / after games I try to find beat writers who post the press conferences and can’t find anything. Hopefully the new trib writer is good.

    Andy will be missed.

  5. Andy was fun in the early new media days switching from fan to reporting and at that time seemed to haves some ins with the front office, especially under the Lindsey regime if I remember correctly. Last few years I haven’t been so impressed, he seemed a little burnt out and acted at times more like a sideline snarky heckler than a reporter and mixed in lots of non sports stuff. There’s enough Jazz fans/blogs/podcasts, etc with opinions. I personally want the paid beat reporters to report Jazz news and try to build relationships w/ the team and FO so we can get interesting stories/insights about the players, drafting, trades, etc.
To end on a more positive note one thing I did appreciate about Andy was that he never afraid to ask uncomfortable questions. Also the use of the word kerfuffle in the NBA will forever be tied to his name.
