The Cardinals Make a SURPRISE Trade!

The St. Louis Cardinals made a strange trade just two days before pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, sending Andre Granillo to the Washington Nationals for reliever George Soriano. What do we think of this weird move from Chaim Bloom’s front office?

  1. Bloom has a reason. The question is what is It ???Possibly Soriano’s stuff or arm slot is different than other Cardinals pitchers. Also maybe they have seen a correction to make Soriano better. Also gives you a veteran in the bullpen ✨ possibly they see he could be turned into a starter if needed … not Granillo

  2. If we can figure out the reason for every move our POBO does then he's not taking enough chances. I want some head scratcher deals especially when you are looking at relief pitchers and stuff.

  3. I am posting this comment before actually watching the episode.
Here is what I belive happened.
The 40 man roster was full.
At least 1 person is getting DFA'd to make room for Wetherholt before opening day.

And, it is very unlikely to be a position player. If any of the non-roster invites make the team, more than 1 player will need DFA'd, and it is going to be a pitcher.

Granillo was likely near the bottom of the depth list. So instead of waiting to DFA Granilo at the end of spring training, they make the trade, pick up Soriano, who they can work with during spring training and see if he has any future. If he does not work out, they can DFA him at the last minute prior to opening day, and he will likely then clear waivers, and they can retain him in the system.

  4. Yes I like the quick reaction videos. Yeah I wouldn't read too much into Atlanta, Baltimore and Washington DFAing him. All three over use the waiver system. Jeff Jones brought up the fact when they traded for Soriano they would have to dump someone to do so and the guy they chose was Andre. That's pretty telling of what they thought of Andre

  5. I was taken by surprise.

Dave Duncan had the flexibility to get pitchers he wanted to fix. Does Matt Pierpont get that power now? When will the Cardinals have a "pitch factory" like the Brewers?
