Love the move
Do the paying fans think the team is better. Your Philly ass kissing if you think this team is better.
And while I generally like and support Dombrowski, this is why he earned the nickname Dumbrowski with some fans…he and topper showed their losing hand at the end of the season and now EVERY club in MLB has no reason to offer fair trade value. If they had been adults and managed Casty (like the Bird's GM does with his problematic players) then they wouldn't be in this position of "we hate this guy so bad he can't be on our team come spring training…oh and how come none of you are offering fair value?" What a dumbass. BTW I'm not a Casty fan but he doesn't deserve this. There are far worse players around the league who received far better treatment than this guy has
Love this move
How stupid can they be.
Your 100% fight!
He is a clubhouse problem
Looking forward to the baseball season and Phillies games again. Hard to believe this will be Bryce Harper's 8th season with the Phillies.
Give the mets a good prospect and they will take on the salary of Nick. Mets can give a prospect back low level. Mets need a RFer
Completely agree that Dombrowski mismanaged the Castellanos situation. That’s a rookie GM mistake. He has been a highly successful MLB executive for nearly 40 years. How is it that he suddenly forgot the most basic negotiating tactics? He did something similar with Strahm, signaling that Strahm ran his course with the organization. The result? The Phillies got less than fair value in the trade. I’m not a Dombrowski hater. You can’t take away the success he has had in building championship teams across multiple organizations. But with unforced errors like these, maybe it’s time to recognize that he is not what he used to be. Whatever the reason, whether it’s aging, diminished interest, absence of pressure to protect his job, or maybe he hasn’t kept up with how running a MLB team has changed substantially since his glory days.
As Connor observed, other teams may simply be holding out, knowing Casty will likely be available for league minimum salary of $780K. That’s no doubt true to a degree, but he is a fit for a few teams. If I’m the GM of one of those teams and I think Castellanos can improve my club, I would not want to lose the opportunity to one of the other three or four teams that may have some level of interest. By taking on just a bit more salary than the league minimum, say $1.5M to $2M, you can lock in the player rather than waiting your turn in the wavier claim priority order. You remove the competition for the player for what amounts to chump change in the era of $300M+ payrolls. There is still a possibility that they can pull off a trade for salvage value. Improbable? Yes, certainly yes. But there is a non-zero chance.
We know there was conflict between Castellanos and Thompson. I have to think that was the main reason they are running him out of town. If the personalities were not a factor, could the Phillies have kept him in a diminished role? Could he have been Marsh’s platoon mate in LF as a part timer at a less challenging position, an arrangement which may better hide his defensive flaws? He may have been the highest paid part time player in the league, but it’s better than paying for him to play for another team.
Du ,I mean Dombrowski gets hired, has some success with the current farm system, destroys the farm, the team and constantly gets shy on FA,starts kicking tires, cans and soft shoe dancing with the media becoming very conservative and finally gets fired.
