Red Sox called Cubs about trading for Nico Hoerner, but teams ended up discussing Matt Shaw more

Matt Spiegel shared what he learned about recent trade discussions between the Cubs and Red Sox centered on Chicago second baseman Nico Hoerner. The sides actually ended up discussing Cubs infielder Matt Shaw more than they did Hoerner, Spiegel reported.

  1. I never doubted Nico will remain a Cub. Jed rarely respond to rumors and he listens to every offer. But I trust him to make the best decision at the end. So it never bothers me one bit hearing the rumors.

  2. Ok then. If the teams are more interested in Matt Shaw then that's good news if we can get what we need. That's key! We definitely need a closer first and foremost. We also could use a thumper in the outfield that we didn't get from Tucker. I said all along to trade Shaw now that we have Bregman and keep Nico. But I want to know how interested teams really are in Shaw and what the Cubs can get? Shaw is definitely the expendable one of the two.
